Where I grew up in Houston was overrun by gang violence. Several inner city problems overlapped into the neighborhood. My folks and I later moved out when things got out of hand. Eventually, we relocated to Austin because the school system was superior to that of Houston. Now there are gangs moving here like cockroaches. I'm sure the powers that be think demolishing the housing projects and crack dens and replacing them with condominiums, golf courses, and country clubs is the answer. That's what happened to the Wards in Downtown Houston, and all they did was relocate the problems. Nevertheless, gentrifying the ghetto is a waste of time and money.

For awhile, I thought we should line them all up and shoot them or gather them onto ships and dump them into the ocean so the sharks can gobble them up because half of them will never be productive members of society anyway. However, that would be considered un-American. The judicial system is a revolving door because they usually revert to their old habits after they get out of jail, prison, or juvenile hall because most of them have no education or job skills. Basically, we must tackle the root of the problem to break the perpetual cycle. I don't know if that entails sterilizing every welfare queen who keeps squirting out babies like toasters, castrating deadbeat dads knocking up everything that moves, or the National Guard patrolling ghettos.

Perhaps legalizing drugs, gambling, and prostitution would flush out most of these problems. It's a complex enigma that's been ignored too long when Memphis now has 300 gangs. Meanwhile, we're worried about what's going on in the Middle East that's out of our hands. The real war on terror is here on our own soil in the inner cities when these parasites wreak havoc on innocent civilians day in and day out. I read somewhere that a lot of them are even joining the military now and getting combat training. That part is most unsettling. Much of this I blame on rap and hiphop, but I imagine the problem goes deeper than that. What shall we do about our gangs in America?

I have a very simple solution and that is that they should be treated as terrorist organizations/criminal enterprises because that is what they are. If an organization is involved in crime, its members can be jailed for many years even if they cannot be linked directly to the crimes of the gang. It is called RICO and it has been very effective against the Mafia families.

I'll buy that. These cockroaches are why I'm more inclined to support the "three strikes law." However, that should only apply to hard criminals. A lot of these guys are incarcerated because they thought they were smarter than the legal system.

I have a plan ,we assemble a team, Unit if you will, perhaps federal Marshals , this unit is basically a Special Forces caliber, with state of the art weaponry, maybe we contract with Xe........We give them the full support of the US justice department and we unleash Hell on these punks until there are no more.

That isn't a half bad idea actually. I wonder what it would take for people to start viewing gangs this way?

That's all good and well; except there's one problem. We could call the exterminators all day long, but they'll just keep popping up left and right until we tackle the cause of these problems. It's like a cancer in that you can't just remove the tissue to cure it and voila! There must be some kind of deterrent and other countermeasures to ensure that sickness doesn't metastasize. Our great nation must figure out what's giving these gangs their sustenance. We ascertained Prohibition was a main contributor to the Al Capones, Bugsy Siegels, and Dutch Schultzes of the world, but now we're faced with a newer challenge.

Longer prison sentences for violent crimes and welfare reform so that people are not paid to have children that they cannot support and raise. Kick all able bodied off welfare and have people learn the value of working for a living. Idle youth are the root of gangs.

Only the people can save this nation and that ain't gonna happen . So enjoy whats left because the powers that be are working to finish the nation off . They want to spread the wealth around , ours not theirs ! While they talk about giving they are taking , while they talk about liberty they are enslaving .

They have stolen our nation and it's gold. they can go elsewhere and live in luxuary . We will be stuck with the nation we deserve a third world hell hole .

Ok ,well I reckon that when the "Unit" comes to town and eliminates all the little gang banger heroes, it will be less appealing for the younger kids, here is another step, a lot of these gangs are still operating in prisons, if you are convicted of gang activity, you don't get to go to prison and hang with your homeys and get more tattoos and lift weights, you go down to Arizona, because now we are giving Sheriff Joe the authority to rehabilitate you as he sees fit! Oh, we all so need to enact the fast track for the death penalty..........you got six months give it your best shot, then its one less gang banger crowding our prison. We also need to get the whole silly notion of racial profiling out of our heads.

Great post. The fact that many gang bangers continue on in prison demonstrates that prison is hardly the solution. Rabid dogs need to be put down its that simple.
