We don't need more prisons, we need to execute more habitual offenders who've done serious crimes, and stop sending drug addicts to prison.

I agree on the execution part. I'm not sure I follow you on the drug addicts part though. What do you want to do with them?

Are you suggesting that narcotics be sold on the open market with storefronts and cash registers? Just curious what you mean by comparing alcohol and drug gangs. The two seem to have very different inner workings and more complex networks of international origin.

Yes, regulated like alcohol.

I know, radical idea But no, it's not really if you read the Constitution.

And the reality is, the black market exists, and is much worse than a legitimate taxpaying market. On top of that, we are wasting resources punishing people for owning property. Given your OP, this should be an important fact to you.

If a person gets high and commits a crime, then punish them. But getting high should not be a crime by itself. We have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

I don't know what I want to do with drug addicts, I think there are better options then putting them in prison, letting them out, and going through that process over and over again. Drug addicts need rehabilitation, education, life skills, job training, and discipline, I don't think prisons offer that really.

Yep. Bootlegging during prohibition was a very complex, international operation. And the gangs were no less violent then than they are today.

I for one am all in favor selling most recreational drugs "on the open market with storefronts and cash registers."

What do you consider a recreational drug? Which drugs would warrant prison time, if any?

I am in Michigan.

Here they have closed a good share of the prisons due to lack of funds.

but the gangs didnt go away when prohibition was repealed, they moved into other criminal activity. Decriminalizing drugs wont stop the street gangs of today, they will just switch to different criminal activities.
