Does anyone here think that it really "takes a village"? I havent seen any evidence that "villages" like this have the abiliy to raise a child and have a positive influence.
while i agree that there does need to be some level of personal responsibilty i have a problem with them saying her underage son couldn't live with her or she would lose her housing. where was he supposed to go? he didn't have any other options. this shouldn't be allowed.
she could of sought alternative housing. And there is always other options, many of times the best options are the hardest.
So, where is this boys father? That is the real
problem with gangs. Men need to stand up and
take responsibilty for their children. And women
need to stop having babies with men who don't
take care of their children.

I don't think it "takes" a village but it certainly makes a difference. I wasn't raised by just my mother and father. I was raised by my grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors, church members, etc and they all got the same respect my parents got.
I think it's even more important if it's a single-parent household.
I was thinking it was just the opposite. Too many people dont bother telling their own kids what to do..
I would say it is both at the same time. Many parents wont tell their own kids what to do, but, are ready to fight is someone else tell their kid what to do.

Making blanket statements also don't help
Many gang members have fathers that are in the picture. Also many of them have mothers that only had children with the one father. I am not saying this is always the case, but it is fact.

true i just don't feel it was the governments place to say her child couldn't live there.

The father hasn't been mentioned in any of the stories i've seen.

Deep words there! You are so right!
If you teach your own children,
nobody else has to.
