Please include the period they're discussing; Obama's been in office for 18 months; at a year for publication, that would give him 4-6 months of being in office at the time of writing. How valid would books be if they discussed the first 6 months of a presidency after the Bush fiasco?

The books were from 2 - 3 years ago, when Bush was still the US president.
Curious as to "why" he is well-liked? Because he isn't Bush? Or did he do something? Something that fits your ideology? Or something that is good for the nation? Keep in mind, we are not idiots... I don't like Bush, but that doesn't mean I like Obama either... please don't tell me he is "cool" or a "great speaker"...
I honestly don't know why. I've been going to school in Ohio since the fall of 2008 so I don't have too many in depth conversations about Obama with my family or friends back home. I have my own problems with him - not likely the same problems you have (I think he doesn't go far enough, and he's wasting a majority) and whenever the conversation turns to that, those I talk to are quite surprised with my criticisms.
You have to remember that the political table in the US is slanted quite far to the right. While some call Obama a socialist, there's little in his policies to indicate that, and in Canada he'd be center or slightly to the right. Europe too. The definition of right vs. left in the US has dramatically swerved from the rest of the world.
He probably practiced in advance for just such an event.
I asked someone once if there was anything good at all she could say about George Bush (she passionately hated him.) She thought for a minute and then said, "He keeps himself fit." Guess it came in handy for just that occasion.
Actually, I find it the opposite. Most of my friends in Europe know more about American politics than most Americans do, unfortunately. It's like comparing BBC news to Fox News....bit of a difference there.
I find most Americans are pretty ignorant to our own political process and are single issue voters. They don't know who their congressman are, or their senator and probably couldn't name the succession of power from the President down.
I think so, too. Our area newspaper started publishing their names and contact information (for the readership's districts) regularly a couple of years ago and had an editorial about how these are your representatives and you should be paying attention to what they are doing.
I am well traveled and not once have I witnessed anyone laughing at or about Obama. Some wonder why nothing has really changed. The feeling I get is that foreigners prefer Obama over Bush but don't feel that he has lived up to the hype.
