I've no doubt that the banking industry fathered the mortgage interest deduction to help make loans more attractive to credit-shy borrowers, probably sometime after the Great Depression when so many banks failed. I'm sure they also had it made a federal crime to rob a bank, thus bringing the FBI and all of its resources to bear. Robbing a 7-11 is a local crime, even if someone is murdered, but a bank robbery is federal territory. I could trot out numerous examples all night.

Working stiffs do not write the tax laws, the vested interests do. Working stiffs need to stop being useful idiots for the ruling oligarchs.
Dude, if you rob a 7-11, it's not the federal government that covers the loss, as with banks...it's the theft insurance paid by the owner of the 7-11.

However, I think we can all agree that it's not the working stiffs who write the tax laws.

LOL.. Krugman. How this guy got listened to for anything with economics is beyond me. He advocated to follow Japans method of recovery, a method that left them in the economic dog house for almost a decade.

What's ironic is that people in those red states are the most reliable of the anti-government "starve the beast" crowd yet are the ones getting the MOST federal dollars, be it from massive military bases in VA, NC, SC, GA, LA, TX, OK or from farm subsidies in other red states. They vote for anyone who says they'll cut taxes, cut spending, cut government, but then they demand all those federal dollars keep flowing to THEIR states. Typical American hypocrisy.

Yes, we have met the enemy and it is us. But the main point is that these hard working people are cutting their own throats by cutting government, who is really the only benefactor they have; the rich would let them starve, or bleed to death on the side of the road.

IRT someone else, NO, I'm not playing the race card. Based on hundreds of years of being oppressed by the wealthy class, black people KNOW that the wealthy are NOT in their corner. They'll vote DEM forever as they feel that party will not abandon them, the way the wealthy want to abandon us.

What was the problem with your 'black people ' before the europeans or America was even a nation ? Since you went back 'hundreds of years this may be a good question for you to answer . I think you are prejudice . I'm not but anytime someone disagrees with most blacks the race card gets used . I stand with all black Americans who take rsponsibilitiy and stop dividng our nation . Why did 98% of blacks vote for a black president ? Did he lie like all the others ?

We need to clean out the gov and put in Americans who care .Close borders, get out of wars and stop NAFTA, CAFTA .
Not going to hapen of course but all nations fall so we aren't the first or last .

Paul Krugman nailed it today with his column called "America Goes Dark" and I agree with him fully.
Quote:
...a nation that once prized education — that was among the first to provide basic schooling to all its children — is now cutting back.
... and it's about time to unravel that pablum crap that's been creeping into education. Lower standards, lower expectations... The government way.

Quote:
How did we get to this point? It’s the logical consequence of three decades of antigovernment rhetoric ..
... more like four decades of goverment abuse, use, screw, blue and tatoo

Quote:
...the end result of the long campaign against government is that we’ve taken a disastrously wrong turn. America is now on the unlit, unpaved road to nowhere.
... citizens have found their own way, day after day, year after year, decade after decade, century after century... government is neither the light nor the way. Government can open frontiers... then get out of the way.

...and yes, much of those taxes are wasted.

Quote:
NSHL10
If you want America to get back on track, start rewarding success. Reward those who do the financially responsible thing. Stop rewarding illegal immigration, unwed mothers, ill prepared college students, and unthinking consumers.

Stop elevating stupidity into victimhood.
America (?) is not going dark... U.S. citizens are going under cover.

It truly is shocking the level of ignorance of those who rail against the govt., the same people, the obscenely wealthy, that have paid their 535 servants to either gut regulatory agencies or look the other way are the same ones who bankroll the propaganda about the evils of government. They count their cash while laughing at those who show up at Tea Party rallies to protest government, making sure they are given free transportation if necessary, and that the rubes will be on FOX News. And THIS, Ladies and Gentleman, is why Americans are the dumbest people in the industrialized world, easily fooled by even juvenile, hackneyed propaganda like the crap found on FOX:

What would they believe when the pro's step in? The same ones who told you to be scared of the evil Saddam Hussein and his nukes?

The Dumbing Down rolls on.........

That's what I thought the thread was about when I read the OP-I was looking forward to an intelligent discussion. Instead, just another attempt to institute class envy. Yawn...

Excellent analysis of the article.

I had to look up the word: elegiac.
Any article that has me looking up definitions is exciting.
I think the points of the article are well made.

Krugman knew exactly what he was doing with the metaphor of "lights going off" - he's a smart man.

I think Krugman is basically incorrect here.

For example, public school cost per student, in constant dollars, has substantially increased during the timeframe that Krugman is discussing:

http://www.heritage.org/static/repor...1F36C34E6E.gif

Likewise, the per head cost for police and public employees (particularly for benefits such as pensions and health care) have substantially increased. He only looks at the level of support services provided, not the delta (annual cost change) to provide these services.
