Being selfish has nothing to do with it. I very well doubt, they could get FULL RENT, especially in this economy. The only reason they are doing it - is to have a GUARANTEED rent income from the government.
You don't eat the cost to maintain a rental property - you write it off, as a deduction on your taxes, thus reducing your stated income. Having the government subsidize your income is just that.
I would actually call the landlords unselfish and private enterprise - if they did it on their own The landlord is no different than the tenant. They are both getting something for free from tax payer dollars. Just calling it what it is

I pay more for renting a home than if I owned one,but can't take a deduction.
That's one of those nice talking points which doesn't work in reality. Several states have drug testing laws but instead of saving money the amount saved ended up being less then the cost of the drug testing program so all it did was drive up costs and create another level of bureaucracy.

My husband said this morning that with the amount of money spent already on garbage, Obama could have given every legal tax payer something like $30,000. That would have helped a family buy health care, keep their homes, cars and stimulate the economy as well.

Yes, they are buying votes (really they buying an image that they aren't "soft"). The same way they attempted to buy their re-election with votes for the Iraqi war and Patriot Act. The same reason why Obama couldn't completely disavow war and had to trade one for the other (Iraq for Afghanistan) You do understand the political fallout that would occur if they decided not to fund the wars? This country's thirst for cheap (read: free) international machismo is well understood by the Democrats.
