I thought socialism was unacceptable,
and then I found out that in the United States there's only 1 airport that is not socialist.

Why is it that 99.9% of our airports are socialist?

Branson opening nation's only privately funded commercial airport - Dallas Morning News (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/bus/stories/DN-branson_11bus.State.Edition1.c23c71.html - broken link) - May, 2009

BRANSON, Mo. – The first plane load of Texans to arrive in Branson on Sun Country Airlines (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Sun_Country_Airlines - broken link) on Monday will be making aviation history. Not as momentous as the Wright Brothers, but in the annals of American airports, they will be remembered as the first customers of the nation's only privately funded commercial airport.
Branson Airport, two years and $155 million in the making, is alone among the country's 552 airports to offer commercial air service without receiving any federal funding.

Default less than Murtha's Airport....

Branson must have done something right as it not only was privately funded but came in for about $50 million less than John Murtha's airport.

Remote Murtha airport lands big bucks from Washington - CNN.com

Considered one of "the kings of pork" on Capitol Hill by taxpayer watchdog groups, the 19th-term Pennsylvania Democrat has piloted almost $200 million from Washington to Murtha airport. Much of the funding has come in the form of legislative earmarks that are attached to bills before Congress.

That's what government is for--to provide infrastructure to help the people provide for themselves. That includes roads, airports, seaports, etc.

And people ask why I am proud to be from Missouri. We do things on our own here without the goobernut handouts form washington that always ends up a perminate expense to the taxpayers, which in turn is why we are in the mess this nation is in. I got to do some early excavation at this airport, and yes, I am gald I was part of it. I believe they have a solid business plan along with the right key people in place to make it work. And the quicker we quit paying for airports with our tax dollars, the better the Nation will be

And govt control of aiports is something that should be applauded? Look at LGA, JFK, EWR in NYC area. Poor govt planning at its finest. Lack of foresight that aviation would take off as a transportation option has led to all those delays due to lack of runways and three airports that infringe on the airspace of each other, limiting the arrival and departure routes. Philadelphia's, both of Chicago's and BOS are all examples of the brilliance of govt planning of airports. Instead of being pro-active, they were reactive and now these airports find themselves struggling to handle the traffic that they do while DFW is one of the few bright spots that recognized the need for a large airport with enough runways properly placed for traffic flow. Unfortunately, DFW is regressive in a way since the govt passed the Wright Amendment that prohibits Southwest from flying beyond a certain perimeter from Dallas-Love Field in order to protect AA at DFW. Similar rules apply to La Guardia and National Airport in DC. Get this, airlines can only fly from LGA to LAX on the weekends. Govt at its finest.

Want to know govt airport planning? The airport authority in San Diego thought it would be a brilliant idea to build a parking garage right over the approach path to one of the runways making it potentially dangerous if an aircraft fails to avoid it due to how close it is to the runway threshold.

Socialized airports and aviation has been a failure. A disgraceful failure. When you have a flight delay for weather, blame the govt. The planes can fly direct routes with GPS but it will take 15 years at least before air traffic control is updated so for now planes have to use radio navigation and fly routes based off VOR stations instead of GPS satellites. The govt also uses old fashioned radar now which has a degree of error in spacing between aircraft. This means that in bad weather the aircraft have to be spaced even farther apart because the pilots cant see the other aircraft and also because thunderstorms are dangerous. If they used GPS, the spacing could be closer together and there would be fewer delays due to the increase capacity in the system. More space between planes means less capacity which equals more delays.

The govt doesnt react to supply and demand like the free market does. The govt is why the air traffic system is so messed up today.

I the aviation system were completely privatized from building and operating airports through manufacturing the aircraft to training the pilots and mechanics very few people could afford to fly. Instead of a reasonable cost ticket from MHT to ABU I would have to pay as much as I would to charter and individual aircraft.

I would like to see most of the airline subsidies be redirected to high speed rail (on completely separate ROW outside of the terminal cities) connecting cities in the Eastern, Mississippi Valley and West Coast corridors.

There used to be a lot of private airports and they couldn't make it. But you will be happy to know that Mayor Daley is still trying to get a private company to take over the management of chicago's Midway airport. If I am not mistaken, Stewart airport in New York was under a private contract for a while but it didn't work out.
