are these ideologys each others opposite or can they be mixed.
My position would be they are polar opposite but hang on you are about to get an earful ! You will surely get dissertations on the real meaning of conservatives and liberal and all of the cheap imitations today.

That depends on what definition you use. The definition of "liberal" in political discourse has been damaged beyond repair, and many who call themselves "conservative" appear more authoritarian than libertarian.
By my definition, they can be mixed. Exhibit A: Thomas Jefferson, a conservative (didn't want the government to have too much power) but also a classic Enlightenment "liberal."
I don't agree with the way the extreme Right pigeonholes people - equating "liberal" with "leftist." There are a great many people in the US that are socially liberal but do not subscribe to a left-wing economic philosophy.
But fascists do like their labels...as long as they get to apply them to other people.
They are relative positions on a continuum of political belief that runs from right-wing libertarian on the conservative side to left-wing libertarian on the liberal side.
Most Americans lay just to the right or left of center.
People who post on this forum tend to occupy the poles.
The fact that they are relative is shown by the current civil-war on the right-wing between conservatives and ultra-conservatives.
The modern American definition of "liberalism" has nothing to do with traditional liberalism or liberalism in the modern European understanding of the term.
"Socialism", "progressivism", "welfare statism" or whatnot would be far better terms to describe the ideology mistakenly known as liberalism in today's America.

Just like the new words and meanings, they don't even come close to what they use to mean . Now a conservative is a blind hypocritic warmonger in many cases, a liberal is a deviate who thinks there should be limits at all, if it feels good do it .
Everybody has some of each in them. We're all mutts.
