That has contributed to the racial divide since the Southern Baptist Convention openly opposed the Civil Rights Movement and issued a public apology in 1995 regarding it. The majority of people in the Southern United States are Baptist.
Not to let the truth get in the way of your propaganda or anything but "Southern Baptist" is a subset denomination of Baptists. In other words, while most religious people in the South may be Baptist, they aren't all Southern Baptists.

Yes, I understand that. And it doesn't take away from the point about most Southerners being Southern Baptist but it was a nice attempt at trying to distract from the original point namely the Southern Baptist Convention opposed the Civil Rights Movement. You really couldn't dispute that so you had to pick at semantics. And being a Southerner, I think you know that Southern Baptists often refer to themselves as Baptist. I've never heard anyone in the South exclusively state they are Southern Baptist because that is just understood when they say they are "Baptist".

Just because some will raise their voice, doesn't mean others aren't remaining silent.
Believe me, I saw just as much, if not more prejudice and hate up north than I did in my own community back home when I left. Now, it used to be quite bad, back in the 80's, but not nearly as much in the 90's, and today, its far less.
Anecdotal tales are meaningless. Anyone can just as easily say he witnessed more racism in the South. I just find it funny that even when that map clearly shows an overwhelming number of white supremacist groups in the South, Southerners are still in denial about higher level of racial tension and racism that exists there relative to the rest of the United States. It just reaffirms my point. Again, I want to say that racism exists everywhere. The "north" is not immune to racism. However, to pretend that racism is equal across the United States is false. There is clearly more racial tension and racist events in the South. It is unfortunate that Southerners still can't come to grips with acknowledging this. This is very similar to the Islamic community in their failure to acknowledge and openly decry terrorism and the growing violent fundamentalist movement among their community.

If you look at race riots in recent years, they have taken place primarily outside of the South. Of course, there are still racists in the South though.

Most hate crimes exist in the South. Most KKK rallies exist in the South. Most white supremacist hate groups exist in the South.

Most ethnic neighborhoods exist in the North. Most ethnic street gangs fighting each other exist in the North and the West. Most riots over racist police take place in the North and the West. I don't deny the South has problems with race, but I also don't ignore the fact that I, like you, live in a region that's a glass house.
The Southern Poverty Law Center tracks the numbers of hate groups per state and the number of hate groups in the South alone outnumber the total number of groups in the rest of the country. The SPLC's objective is to identify and track hates groups. They have no agenda to smear the South yet their numbers show an overwhelming number of these groups exist in the South.
disagree.
the SPLC is a bunch of self-righteous propaganda. we've had a thread about this. they are a civil-rights era organization that no longer has a purpose. They classify pro-confederate or pro-southern organizations, who make clear statements disavowing racism, as "hate groups." Not to mention that this map says nothing about membership numbers, and it makes no effort to differentiate between a group whose goals are violence, and a group whose goals are, say, oriented toward christian conservative libertarian politics.
you may not agree, but don't pretend like you don't understand the arguments against the SPLC.
and from what i can see in this thread, your claims that "The south is more racist" are based entirely upon some silly little map created by the SPLC, that you're trying to pass off as an unbiased, authoritative source. Even if it were unbiased, comparing the "number of chapters per state" is meaningless.
the south's "racism" is that we don't spend enough money to educate the poor, who for us are disproportionately black. Nothing all that different than how y'all treat legal hispanics in Arizona. Hate crimes and klan meetings, in 2010, are issues that concern Hollywood, and clueless people who watch too much television.
The Muslim world is overwhelmingly composed of peaceful individuals who are not violent. That being said, the Muslim world contains a disproportionately higher number of terrorists that base their actions on religious principles than any other faith group. When the Muslim community is approached with this, they get defensive as opposed to taking a more proactive approach by admitting there is a problem and that it should be addressed. They will respond with things like "There are terrorists who were Christian and Jewish too" That does nothing to rectify the situation aside from creating more resentment and doing nothing to curb the growing violent fundamentalist population among them.
Similarly, the South responds in the same way. The overwhelming number of Southerners are not racist yet when approached about their disproportionately higher number of hate crime events, hate crime groups, history of racist events, history of electing openly racist politicians, they get defensive and claim the rest of America has the same problems. The rest of America has those problems but not to the same degree that is found in the South. And I think even Southerners are aware of this but unfortunately respond with a defensive retort out of some misguided sense of pride.
Neither actions benefit either community. I think the rest of the country would view the South differently if they stopped taking this denial approach and instead started working to correct those mistakes done by their predecessors regarding race relations. Similarly, Muslims would probably be embraced more if they more openly decried the actions of Muslim terrorists and took a more a active role in addressing the violent fundamentalist segment of their community.
Southerners have shown great improvement over the last 200 years. (Relatively speaking)
Muslims have grown more violent and angry and committ mass murder. Radical Islamists take much more extreme actions to fulfill their Jihad.
When southerners are stoning famly members for not marrying their assigned spouse and committing adultry you can make this comparision. For now it is way off base to compare southerners to jihadists.
