No, this is not a race baiting thread. Please keep reading.

What are your thoughts on the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC)?

Do you recognize these members as leaders of the black community?

Does it concern you that the membership of the CBC has a significant cross population with the membership of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC)?

Does that cross membership between the CBC and the CPC make the black community appear as though they prefer Socialists as their representatives?

Does the CBC ignore the conservative voting block of the black community and their concerns?

Has the CBC passed its prime and does its Congressional membership now promote more division than unity (from its early 1970's civil rights era of founding)?

Lots of questions for careful consideration and response. Thanks in advance for approaching and responding in this thread with a serious mind.

There is NO BLACK COMMUNITY. Any elected official that only represent their race and not those that they were elected to represent are useless. This goes for the Black Caucus, Asian Caucus and Hispanic Caucus. Makes no difference, don't you agree?

What are your thoughts on the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC)?
I do not think about them in general. However, specific viewpoints and community concerns need to be represented in the legislature.

Do you recognize these members as leaders of the black community?
The only people who believe in definitive idea of "Leaders of the Black Community" are not themselves members of the Black community. The question is as silly as if I asked you - Who are the "Leaders of the White community"?

Does it concern you that the membership of the CBC has a significant cross population with the membership of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC)?
No. "Progressive" means different things to different people

Does that cross membership between the CBC and the CPC make the black community appear as though they prefer Socialists as their representatives?
Not really.

Does the CBC ignore the conservative voting block of the black community and their concerns?
No. The Republican Party does that quite well all on its own.

Has the CBC passed its prime and does its Congressional membership now promote more division than unity (from its early 1970's civil rights era of founding)?
Maybe when this question is also being asked about the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the Congressional Asian Pacific Caucus and the Congressional Native American Caucus we can discuss whether or not the Congressional Black Caucus is "passed its prime". However the Black focus of this thread and far too many others are evidence of the obsession with making sure that Black people stay marginalized and "in their place"

I do agree. However what I think doesn't matter. I am seeking the opinions of others in specific regard to the Congressional Black Caucus. What are your thoughts beyond what you have already expressed; and, how would you answer the rest of the questions?

calipoppy, I'm sorry you appear to have taken offense to my questions. They were sincere and I am trying to learn from the answers. My elected Representative is a member of both the CBC and CPC and I am trying to get a better view of what others might think of the organizations and their membership.

1. What are your thoughts on the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC)?

I think that a caucus to develop and strategize over legislation to promote the interest of African Americans is a good thing. Having said that I more than a bit perturb by the fact that CBC has, despite their own rules made it clear that Congressman Stephen Cohen who represents the majority African American 9th District of Tennessee, wasn't going to be invited to the caucus. If Cohen was elected by a majority of African American voters he should have the ability to represent their concerns within the caucus not because of who he is but who he represents.

By definition as elected officials they have to be considered part of the communities leadership. A part.

Not in the least bit.

A ridiculous question.

Who is this conservative bloc to be ignored? African American voters can be extremely conservative on some issues and extremely liberal on others. Like most Americans they are impossible to pigeon hold on every issue. So, do member of the CBC ignore those concerns that could be characterized as being conservative by some, no more than the ignore some extremely liberal concerns of their constituents.

You see divisiveness, I strength through unity.
