If you aren't smart enough to set your privacy settings, and then announce to everyone that you will be gone you might just be asking to get robbed.

That might be a good way to catch crooks too. I live in NH, and wouldn't mind catching crooks all day long.

The people on my FB page don't announce that they're going. But they sure talk about it once they come back. Photos and all.

Yep, it depends on your FB settings. And your level of sophistication and maturity.

This way, we put responsibility in the hands of those who... you know... are actually responsible for that?

I always put up that I'm out of the house, even when I'm not. I have my car parked off the driveway to make it appear I'm not home, and I have my handgun safely holstered away. What can I say? I like to live dangerously. If others did the same and burglars get killed trying to rob someone's house, they may not believe the status updates anymore.

It makes you wonder what's wrong with the people who feel they have to update the world on every second of their day. I have a coworker who announces every move from her cell phone. It looks like this:

6:03 am - don't wanna be up this early :-(
7:10 am - just ate some yummy banana pancakes :-) hope traffic on I4 isn't too bad
7:35 am - dropped the kids off at school, now it's a mad dash to work
8:00 am - made it to work on time :-)
11:54 am - I'm starving! What's for lunch? hmmm maybe Chipotle
4:38 pm - 22 more minutes and this work day is OVER!!!!
6:11 pm - don't feel like cooking...maybe take the kids out for pizza at Unos
6:40 pm - ended up at Altamonte mall, now we're stuck in the rain of course I forgot my umbrella :-( oh well might as well catch a movie
8:53 pm - kids are in bed, just washing dishes and waiting for Bad Girls Club
10:04 pm - off to bed. GN facebook!

It annoyed me so much I blocked her from my page. Smart phones & social networking websites are dangerous for stupid people.

I guess those are people who feel lonely. Unless you left out a lot of updates there are far more excessive people on Twitter etc. It's a bit sad actually.
Usually that enthusiasm wears off after a few weeks.

I am amazed at the yahoos that like to post to their facebook accounts that they're on vacation, or at a ballgame or whatever.

On a side note...it would be interesting to see a police dept set up a sting operation where they have one of those people with 2000 friends and wide open privacy settings announce to the world that they're leaving for 2 days....then wait for a burglary.
