A woman in San Francisco was being beaten by her common-law husband, now she gets asylum in the US? I am not in any way belittling domestic abuse, or the victim, but what is happening to our United States? Now if you are born to US parents, Born on US soil, and now Beaten on US soil, you get US Citizenship, or at least Permanent Residence status. Wow.

Some Mexican men are known to beat their women, sadly, so I guess now that San Francisco has set the precedent, we can expect to see more abuse, and more loop holes?

Well if you have ever been a victim of domestic abuse, you would understand. Now don't get me wrong, I am totally against illegal immigration and think what Az and the other 22 sates are doing is great. BUT this, at least she went the legal route and asked for help to get out of the violence! I would have helped her@!

I thought the immigration rules were specific to asylum addressing political or religious persecution and not to for women choosing bad husbands.

USCIS Political Asylum and Refugee Status

The US immigration act defines refugee as any person who is outside any country of such person's nationality or, in the case of a person having no nationality, is outside any country in which such person last habitually resided, and who is unable or unwilling to return to, and is unable or unwilling to avail himself or herself of the protection of, that country because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.

I doubt that we're going to see a fresh influx of illegals claiming they've been battered.

You want to stop illegal immigration? Go after the employers.

As per Amnesty International, women most likely would fall under the 'social group' category:

Gender-Related Asylum

Asylum is supposed to be granted in cases of persecution by governments and social groups, not by someone you choose to live with.

So all the women that like abusive guys because of the drama now will get a free ticket to the USA?

If the offending nation allows the oppression of women then we should allow asylum for them and any minors. Not even a starter for me. I would not say Mexican men are any more prone to it than other groups. From my personal view, Africans are probably the worst offenders followed by white males.

The government is persecuting them by allowing the abuse.
