Um . . . with the exception of the entire medical community. It is a medical term. Still.
it may still be a "medical term" but it hasn't been used in a very long time. I doubt very seriously a doctor would use the term to describe a mentally challenged child to the parent
It looks like the word "retarded" replaced more derogatory words and has now become a derogatory word itself.
Mental retardation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Retarded comes from the Latin retardare, "to make slow, delay, keep back, or hinder." The term was recorded in 1426 as a "fact or action of making slower in movement or time." The first record of retarded in relation to being mentally slow was in 1895. The term retarded was used to replace terms like idiot, moron, and imbecile because it was not a derogatory term. By the 1960s, however, the term had taken on a partially derogatory meaning as well."
parents will tell you while gathering history and physical data "(insert child name) is MR" that is what it is called. All these years of people using it as an insult and suddenly things turn in to OMG she did not just say the word retarded.......it is a medical classification and yes it is still used by the medical community.
Mental retardation a medical term, used in DSM-IV.
My mother's only sister was mentally retarded. Her intelligence was about that of a five-year-old. She died in the mid-90's at the age of 61 having never had the chance to become "developmentally disabled".
So exactly what should I call my brother in law now. I mean I want to be PC and all
What's his name? Call him that.
