The non-defense discretionary budget isn't that large. Quite frankly, it is mostly beside the point to worry about it at all.

The big-ticket budget items are Medicare, Social Security, defense, and interest on the national debt.

We still need to find a way to control health care expenditures. Simple steps like permitting the unlimited reimportation of pharmaceutical drugs (and having Medicare do the same) could save many billions of dollars over time.

I like that debt clock page Interestingly the per capita debt in California is about the same as in Texas, roughly 13k.

Anyway, although it would be painful, wouldn't it make sense to pay back all debt right now and forbid new debt by law. To do that all citizens, especially the more wealthy ones, would have to give a considerable percentage of their wealth, but they could be gradually repaid with the interest the US would no longer have to pay on her debt
