I have no way to prove it, but I seriously think this still has to deal with deep seated prejudices that are just lying beneath the surface. People simply don't change that quickly.
I've known to many people who just look down at black people for being black. The first time they do anything that makes them appear different, well "Oh, thats because he's black".
But instead of saying that it was "He hates America" which turned into "He's not a Christian" and now is "He's a Muslim".
Different accusations, same tired hate speech. You may disagree with the Presidents policies, but all of these statements are just silly prejudgments.

I don't think ALL criticisms of Obama out there are this, but I think some are......and I'm white!

The video is very funny, but sadly it clearly points out the stupidity of the far right. The obvious bites them on the butt and does not even make them flinch. Just as the word "Socialist" has replaced the word" Liberalism" in the right wing vocabulary, "Muslim" has replaced the word "black" concerning Obama. It is so obvious. They can't help it, it's just the way that they have been wired.

There are roughly 60,000,000 Americans that believe the President is a Muslim. Now I know that my Grandfather is one of him, but I forgive him.
He grew up in the 30's and 40's, before segregation was done with, before the civil rights amendment, and while there were still civil war veterans living. His Uncle fought in the civil war.
He once told me that "black people are the descendants of Cain, and his children were cursed with the scar to show they were all killers" aka being born black.
Now I don't subscribe to this kind of hate, I did when I was much younger and didn't know better. Then I made a black friend, he moved in next door. He was my best friend. One day he told me about the "pillars" of his faith. Then I found out he was Muslim.
It was never a problem, he even went to my baptist church with me for an overnight. I loved it, but they treated him like he was an outsider. Made me damned ashamed of my former faith.
There are roughly about 60 million Americans who grew up with the same feelings that I grew up with, or are as old and backwards as my Grandfather. I know one day that kind of hate will die out, I just hope it happens sooner rather than later. Its my personal belief, that all of this kind of speech against the current President is derived from the same well as my Grandfathers understanding of African Americans.
I'm not saying if you criticize the President you are prejudiced, or anything else like that. I disagree with the President on several issues. But its the "He's a Muslim" and "He wasn't born in America" and crap like that, that really gets my goat, and I know comes from our darkest periods of American History.

While maybe some of the He's a Muslim" and "He wasn't born in America" may come out of a dark period of America, I don't think most of it does. This may be the way that you are able to cope with these thoughts, because of your background, but there are many believers of these concepts that don't fall into your reasoning.
if Obama's name wasn't so close to Osama Bin Laden's, (one letter) I don't think the Muslim accusations would be there...even Keith Ellison doesn't get that much flack because he doesn't have a Muslim sounding name
I do believe that there is something timely about a President coming into power so quickly after 9/11 with that name...sometimes fact is stranger than fiction
Obama did however, claim attachment to Black Liberation Theology and that's not something you can duck quite as easily
the fact that some white people ignored his ties to Rev Wright's church is still amazing to me...a church dedicated to black supremacy over whites, and liberal whites would willingly vote for a candidate with close ties to it because it's the en vogue thing to do
Ignored or not told by the media. I figured it was just a ploy but I looke into Rev Wright he is as crazy as Farakhan. For the pres to sit there for 20 years nd listen to this rubbish shows me has has misguided judgement on the USA

Don't forget there was another black candidate for president, Alan Keyes, and no one would have accused him of being a Muslim. It has nothing to do with Obama being half black - it has nothing to do with his race.
In Islam and in Islamic law, Obama certainly is a Muslim.
In Islam, if a child is born the father's religion is passed to the child and in Islam there is no freedom to try other religions and leave Islam. Muslims throughout the world became Muslim in the same way Obama did.
