Especially, when so many of them need counseling themselves. Nope, not a good idea.
A recent survey by the counseling organization Cop2Cop found 25 percent of corrections officers reported symptoms of depression and 20 percent had symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder -- similar to estimated rates among Iraq war veterans.
Cop2Cop has also played a more active role in the state's prisons, publicizing their 24-hour hotline. Castellano said that since 2000 they have answered 24,000 calls from distraught New Jersey officers, and stopped 169 from taking their own lives.
