Public education should be for a public willing to learn, not a social services agency or anything else they have morphed into.

And yes, it starts with the family then extends to the individual and then to the skills of the teachers. You can't just change the last part and expect results.
I agree completely, however, What we can't as individuals change is a teaching staff protected by tenure. That is unless we have the option of doing so by changing schools.
Some have said pay for private schools yourself then. Uhmmm I am already paying for schools via school tax.
I agree with you about disruptive students. I also agree about people using public schools as a daycare.
The individual. If parents do their jobs early on the child wants to learn and do well. However the best preperation in the world can be derailed by a bad system and bad teachers.
Right now our public school system is lacking.

Yea, right tell me all about that good ole fashion Conservative accountability.

The curriculum. Come now be honest. Its not as lacl of curriculum that is in question. Its the teacher charged with teaching said curriculum.
Private schools offer greater control for the parent. Public schools are an example of what happens when politicians call the shots.
No not all public schools are bad, nor are all public school teachers. When I took my child out of Pittston Area when I moved her education improved drastically.
Now what part of my post discussed Ipods, welfare queens or steak?

I just hate this disgusting hypocrisy. You right wingers love to pretend there's a horde of welfare queens throwing your hard-earned tax dollars around on filet mignon and iPods, but when it suits your purposes for YOU to be the welfare queens, that's a different story!

tinman, you're one of the harshest critics of poor people on this message board, too.
I forgot to address this point.
How have I been a harsh critic? I came from a very poor family. Grew up on a small farm. 5 kids, 3 adults living in a 3 bedroom house. New school clothes? Never had new clothes.
Do I suggest that some folks on welfare prefer that life style over working for their dollar? You bet I do. Do I suggest that we need a greater level of accountability for those caught abusing the systems? You bet I do.
How often have I said that we as a society should help the little guy? That help does not include carrying them indefinetly.
Harsh? I think Not.
By the way all 5 kids turned out to be middle class citizens. We were never taught to make excuses for failure, to blame others, or to expect handouts.

Education was once the ultimate form of local government. You elect your own school board. Some states have tenure, some do not. In the old days, local districts wrote their own curriculum.

Anyone else find it a wee bit ironic it was a Republican president who nationalized education?

Hey I'm all for school vouchers...............As long as I as a tax payer without children also get a refund for not sending a child(ren) to a public school. That's fair, right?

Why does anyone care about where the Prez sends his kids? What does that have to do with vouchers? I think special provisions have to be made for the children of the Prez...maybe a private school in DC can handle those responsibilities a lot easier.
