Silas - I think I mentioned this before but do you remember the biblical character that was big and strong and threw his weight around to keep the world in line? IIRC his name was Goliath.

yeah, it is still as flawed an analogy, as it was then!
In lieu of a biblical lesson suffice to say, Goliath was the bad guy we are not!
I wonder if Goliath felt he was a bad guy.
Funny how I start out asking for specifics about proposals as to how we should "throw our weight around" so that everyone can understand what a great "shining city on the hill" we really are, and we end up with "Goliath was a bad guy, we are not." Oh well, I tried.
So many times bad guy or good guy depends on which end of the gun you are looking at. We have been acting like a Goliath for over 150 years and it beginning to catch up with us. Our empire is collapsing from Korea to Tierra del Fuego and we are about to reap what we have sown. It is not going to be pretty but it will be interesting.
Peace through strength. What a foolish idea! There is always somebody stronger, smarter or meaner. Bullies are always taken down sooner or later. Sometimes by other bullies. Sometimes a group of previous victims do the take down. Either way it hurts. I prefer peace through travel, trade and honest dealing.
I probably agree with Bolton more than most of you.
While I agree that peace through trade and exchanges is the best way to go, I believe the world does have some characters who need a 2x4 across the bridge of their nose. I generally don't agree with foreign intervention, but I am not totally against it either. And don't believe the elimination of Israel would bring peace and harmony to the middle east, it just changes the targets. And we are part of many enemies list.
In this case, I don't see a negotiation with Iran that has a favorable outcome. I wouldn't be upset to be reading any moment now about what we have done, or worked with others to do, militarily to Iran's nuclear development program.
Oh by the way, I was AGAINST the war in Iraq BEFORE we went in. I didn't view Bin Laden as linked to Hussein (sunni and shiites generally aren't allies) in any way, and I thought his presence kept Iran somewhat occupied. I do agree that Saddam was a jerk in allowing appropriate weapons inspections, but believe we could have handled that with a strong arm approach less severe than what we actually did.
