Since Hippies are almost always mocked on this board, is that really justified? What were the positive and negative aspects and consequences of that era?
We had a hippie camp near our farm when I was growing up. I remember my Dad bringing them produce and Mom would drop off groceries. They would gift us candles they made, I guess people collect those now.
I'm 61 -- a little young for the hippie movement. We lived in Bermuda in the 60's and there weren't a bunch of hippies.
Don't you think there are 'varying' degrees of hippies....lol.
Some were fashionable hippies and could have been trust account kiddies. Some were not, worked, etc.
I would say the hippies did bring the drug culture to the 'mainstream'.
As for the drugs being better back then. Have you tried today's weed?
I never thought of hippies as being the environmentalists.
Wasn't that the 'granola' crowd...not necessarily hippies -- some hippy like tendencies but not hippies.
If you were a teen hippie you were probably mimicking the fashion, trends...if you were a 25 year old hippy that's different right?

Cool music, I guess. Beyond that, the only thing the hippie deal did for me was give me a huge load of indoctrination that it took about forty years to shake off. Done.
Holistic healing movement came out of that time period (US), questioning mainstream medical practices & mainstream "knowledge." Herbalism revived in the US, acupuncture, etc. Positive influence. Now not that "alternative" and considered more "integrative." More evidence based science behind it, more acceptance, etc.
I seem to recall (whatever you think of his politics) that Andrew Breitbart wrote an entire chapter in his book "Righteous Indignation" about the liberals (and I think he referred to those who were hippies in the 60s) infiltration into our education system here in the US. That alone was worth the price of the book. There are many old hippies were I live and they are all far left and are part of the education industrial complex.

My ancestors were using herbal medicine LONG before the hippies came along. Rather than questioning so-called "mainstream medical practices", they simply recognized them as scams and never adopted them.
