Seems there is no thread on Hippies, yet.

Since Hippies are almost always mocked on this board, is that really justified? What were the positive and negative aspects and consequences of that era?

Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out! That said it all and is still a good idea if you can figure out a way to afford it.

Many of those are now teaching in our universities. And that is bad.

Actually, they were a relatively small crowd, predominantly white, that is given entirely too much credit. It came largely on the heels of the Beat Generation. But, it sells well. That is the consequence. It sells.

What people don't realize is that there is always a group of people, usually small that exists in each generation and often in each country. Initially started by artists and writers (usually), like the Dada movement or the beatniks and so forth.

They are the cohort of fools who are still destroying the US today. Even as a kid, I wondered what the hell the nation would look like when those idiots were adults and gained political power. Now we know.

Why?

Anybody willing to undergo the necessary studies and has the required intellectual ability can teach at a university if that is what they want to do.

Hippies of the 1960s are probably 100% democrats. Given the "success" fo the democratic congress over the last four years, I think that the competence of the hippies speaks for itself.

Hippy Legacy?

1. Endorsement of illegal drug use
2. Contempt for the family and sex outside of the marriage
3. Lack of respect for the institution of marriage
4. Lack of embracing the work ethic of the previous generation
5. Bad manners
6. Sloppy dress
7. lack of respect for the US and contempt for thier own nation
8. contempt for US servicemen

All in all, essentially everything bad
