Sharif El-Gamal, the leading organizer behind the mosque and community center near Ground Zero, owes $224,270.77 in back property tax on the site, city records show.
El-Gamal's company, 45 Park Place Partners, failed to pay its half-yearly bills in January and July, according to the city Finance Department.
It appears this could be a violation of the lease contract they have with Con Edison.
Wouldn't that be wonderful if Con Edison pulled the lease?
Maybe they can get the city to pay for their property taxes. If it were you or I with that much in back taxes, the city would be coming down hard.

There are plenty of developers that owe back taxes, in this economy they just cannot lease space. Nation wide there are plenty of homes that don't even pay mortgages, forget about back taxes.
That amount of money is not a big deal in NY City. If Con Ed cancels the lease chances are they will be stuck with a vacant building same as most places in the US.

No !!! the city would have foreclosed and sold it at a tax sale.If they don't then any other person that has had their property taken for back taxes has a case against the city. Right????
