Private land that may be receiving public funding. I've asked it before and I will ask it again, where are the 'separation of church and state' activists?
When they will put a stop to a Christian, but not a Muslim, something is wrong with this picture.
As for as the OP, we had (local area) several Baptist Church burnings, not so long ago. Ended up, it was a group of teens. If this was a Baptist Church, no one would be talking about it in P & C.
Burning any building for any reason much less a religiously affiliated building is wrong. The actions of local teens burning a Baptist church are just as wrong as the people responsible for burning this particular mosque site. Additionally there was nothing stopping you are anybody else from starting a thread on the burning of Baptist Churches.
According to the story the funding is available to ANY religious group provided that they can prove that the facility will benefit the general public and their religious activities are funded separately. Keep in mind they have not yet actually been approved to have access to this financing.

The financing is in the form of BONDS which have to get repaid. If you feel that the law is wrong go to New York State, challenge the law and have it re-written so that NO religious organization can have bonds underwritten for any reason. You and those that feel like you have the right in America to go to court and challenge any law you feel is unjust provided you have the legal grounds to do so.
The question is; do you REALLY want to live in an America with one set of laws for one religion and a separate set for another? If you say yes your viewpoint is in direct opposition to the First Amendment.
Any body who has ever moved to rural Tn. from some place else will not find this unusual. In the rural areas, if you ain't from these parts, you do not belong in these parts. Cut and dried. In some areas this intolerance includes peoples from the next county... let alone another state. Another country? Terrerists....all of 'em. (insert banjo music here)

If it a hot topic in NYC, what makes anyone think they would have an easier time in this hick town? I've been to this town before...not surprised at all by this.
Allowing the Mosque to be be built without controversy, would be making a statement that Americans actually believe that "we hold these truths to be self-evident".
Unfortunately this is way too true too many places. Even Christians cannot "get along" in many places. Think about being a Catholic in a Baptist town or being an Anglican in a Scot Catholic city.-

I see this gang mentality to be completely contrary to the rugged individualism claimed by so many wanna be conservatives. These "conservative" attitudes are not limited to the South by any means. Very few people are willing to go their own way in business, religion, sports teams or any other communally determined normal because doing anything your way is likely to be lonely and dangerous. Most human beings are pack hunters, not lone bears.
