Why can't people discuss race like they discuss politics? (Whitehouse, Hispanics, economic)

Many discussions concerning race eventually become a blanket statement (X race does blah) and the defense (X race does not only do blah). Usually what then occurs is that those defending the race cite historical precedents, current demographic stats, and the like. Most people who defend the race typically point out structural problems in our society.
The people who attack the race believe that inherent cultural problems exist. They imply that because X race is X race, they do more (or less) blah. They tend to oversimplify.
Thus, those defending X race simply feel as if they are talking to the most interactive wall ever invented. Many feel saddened by how society is.
When you constantly hear that Blacks are violent, etc. and then provide stats on how higher unemployment rate, lower educational attainment, lower acquired wealth, less social benefits, less parks per sq. mile, higher interest rates, less income for the same job...yet the only retort is Blacks are violent because they have a culture of violence (or worse because they are inherently violent) you realize that having an intelligent discussion is not going to happen. You quickly realize that those people that made the original assertion that Blacks are violent, etc are not here to have an intelligent conversation.
The sad truth is that the people that make those assertions are the ones that are preventing a reasonable dialogue. Ironically, they are the ones most likely to state that a reasonable dialogue is not occurring.
Look, you can have dumb beliefs. That is your right as an American. However, you will be called out. Intolerance should be allowed to be voiced, but should not be tolerated.
Why can’t and don’t people approach the topic of race as they do the topic of politics? I mean…..when I have a debate or discussion about race it’s no different for me than a discussion about politics and parties. Do you dislike or hate someone because they are Liberal or conservative? I know I certainly do not. It seem that people feel that one cannot talk about race without assuming that someone (usually the black person) in the debate is angry and full of hate.
I certainly can’t speak for black people but most of the black people that I know approach the topic of race no differently than whites approach the topic of politics or the divisions that exist between conservatives and liberals. I enjoy white people and their company just as much as I enjoy black people and their company. Most whites I meet like me and I like them, just like liberals and conservatives often like people who are of a different political ideology.
Why can’t people discuss race as freely as they discuss politics?
Many people here do hate others because of their political leanings. We can give you want you want, but it'd be like Storm Front with people of all ethnicity openly being bigots, unashamed.
Discussing race with white people is similar to discussing women's issues with men. There is a lack of shared perspective so either people have to come to the table with very open minds and hearts or nothing will be accomplished. Thing is most people have lived closely with the opposite sex for most of their lives (and admittedly we still don't understand each other) but people of difference races don't share that luxury. We are not nearly as trusting or knowledgeable about each other hence a lack of open minds and hearts. Therefore nothing is accomplished in most cases but misunderstanding and amplified ignorance.
if oyu choose to believe this rubbish, so be it. but before you close your mind, you might want to check out these links, one from neal boortz and one from dr walter williams:
Beacause people are baised, ignorant, selfish, and comfrotable in their own world...
And I know this is a Politics and Other Controversies thread, but don't bring your liberal/conservative bullsh*t in this. Last time I checked, any minority who's a conservative will still be seen as just a conservative by whites and any white kids who try to act like T.I or Z-Ro or (for you older posters or people who don't know ANYTHING about hip hop) Dr. Dre is still seen as a white kid by blacks.
We can't have any real discussion about race because of the way people on this entire planet view themselves and those around them.
Personally, as a younger person who has grown up in a racially diverse area, I don't know why we talk about race AT ALL. This isn't 1960. I didn't even realize racism was still an issue until I heard people of minority status talking about it. Personally, I don't care what race you are. Politics are still a major issue in this country, racism is a non-issue to me. Discussing race is simply not a useful thing to do.
I find threads like this promote racism more than anything else because they call attention to something (racism) that simply isn't an issue any more.
I disagree that it's not an issue, but i agree overall with your sentiments.
That's my policy for the most part. I simply don't discuss race with non-blacks and i cut it off completely as soon as it comes up. I won't even entertain it. It's better that way because the more folks talk about it, the dumber they sound.
Just better to avoid it altogether before someone says something that causes a bad confrontation.

I understand that it might still be an issue (and I might simply be lucky to live in a very diverse neighborhood where no one talks about race), but I think if an entire generation of Americans grew up without having race even MENTIONED to them, racism would simply disappear. I think at this point, the more we talk about it, the worse we make it.
