I'm an African American because I'm an American of African descent. It really is that simple and I don't understand why the OP has so much fiery over it. This is another subtle thread to target minorities or people that are not Anglo. Seriously you ever heard of Italian-American, Greek American etc? In fact I heard some leave the American out when asked their nationality or ethnicity.

Funny that people keep bringing up Italian-American, Greek-American etc.. I have NEVER seen or heard both in the media or in my personal life ANY white American with European ancestory referred to as any thing other than white. Can you recall ever having a conversation with a white person and having them refer to themselves in this way? Now to be clear I am not talking someone from Italy or Greece that has just arrived as I am sure they will refer to themselves as Italian, etc.. I am talking about white Americans that have been here and has assimilated.

My best friend at work (who happens to be white) married a guy who despite being born and raised here still calls himself Italian. I have a classmate who despite being born and raised here (as were her parents) and she calls herself Irish. I have a couple of friends who calls themselves white. I call them whatever they choose to be called. Only something with too much time on their hands would be bothered by the way someone chooses to self-identify.

Yes I have. I've also seen scores of Italian and Irish flags being flown by whites, but that's a topic for another thread.
Anyways, I'm curious as to where you are meeting these black people that "demand" being called African-American? I'm talking about in real life, not on the net or in the media. Where are these people because I'm not seeing them.

I posted this earlier in this thread.
Worked with a lady a few years back that caused a stink because the guy in the next cube referred to one of his customers as a "black guy". NOT her but a client on the phone. She complained and the entire office had to sit through required "diversity training". She became the pariah of the office and soon after left the company because of the "hostile" enviroment. I heard she filed somesort of racial compliant after leaving but never heard anything else about it.

Hmmm, your earlier posts seem to imply that this is somehow endemic amongst blacks. This one case hardly proves your point.
Ya know, I hate to rain on your parade but most black folks do not care if you call them black. In fact many blacks folks prefer black over African-American. It's is painfully clear that you don't know any black people on a personal level, otherwise you wouldn't post half of the crap you do.
Try talking to some black folks in real life. You just might learn something.
