Interesting the difference between Islam and the West.
The west places the troops on trial for their actions,in Islamic culture it would be fine to do such things.
To add,I would wait for the trial results BEFORE condemning the men, seems the military and fedgov. has a track record for NOT actually getting the story right and prosecuting innocent men.
This is true. Waiting for the trail is appropriate. Dishonorable discharges all around if there's enough evidence.
It's what separates the US from them. Only disgraces to the uniform go beyond killing professionally.
For the record, I don't think soldiers should have to analyze the situation before firing. They just can't go around taking body parts from civis. Take dead insurgents' watches, rings, etc. no problem. Big no-no for body parts.
It appears from reading that link you provided the prosecutors got the 'confession' while the soldier was under the influence of medications and suffering from a traumatic brain injury...
My Dad told me when he was in Nam. At night the Marines would protect them while they slept. They would enter the Jungle and hunt for Viet Cong or other Communist preying on our soldiers. In the morning they would come out Jungle with all kind of body parts. That is War my dad would say, either them or me!
No one can understand what that soldier did unless, you yourself can experience the fear of possibly getting killed 24/7.
Actually, my stepfather is also disgusted by this practice as well, and he worked recon deep in the s*** and killed many VC as well as NVA. He claimed that only the most arrogant of soldier would do such a thing, and the eerily progressive elitist remark ("you can't know unless you do it yourself") you gave is clear evidence of that.
Been there but did not do that. I saw this sh** in Nam but was disgusted by it. Taking trophies dishonors the takers more than the taken.
I agree,it is very distasteful and more than a little creepy.
Quote:
What annoyed me was the ban on taking captured weapons and shipping them home. Warriors have been taking weapons from their fallen opponents since the beginning of time. Doing this honors the opponent because the winner will never forget how he obtained the weapon and will be reminded of how frail life can be.
I totally agree,no more battlefield bring backs...sad.

If that holds and no other evidence comes out, then the ruling should be not guilty.

We send people over seas to act like animals, and then we get outraged when they do. Save your outrage for a society that cannot solve it's problems without declaring war.
The government's eagerness to prosecute for whatever political/international reasons is well documented.
