September 11th 2001 I was at work rewiring a shutdown control panel when my boss picked me up yelling , "We're being attacked!". I thought he lost his mind! A few minutes later we were in an office looking at the towers burning as some people were jumping off from the roof.
I was unemployed at the time so I was obviously still asleep . My phone rang and my mom said some idiot crashed his plane into the WTC. I got up and turned on the TV just in time to see the second plane hit. Pretty surreal.
I was at home; a coworker called and asked if I had my TV on (which I didn't). Turned it on just in time to see the second plane hit WTC--the moment we realized it was no accident.
Incidentally, I work for MTA here in New York. I was a conductor at the time, and as it happens, I was assigned to work on the A train that day. It goes through Chambers Street in lower Manhattan, just down the street from WTC. The station was closed, but the sight of footprints running wild in a thick layer of gray dust is something I will never forget.
I used to sleep with the talk radio on and listen to Art Bell's overnight show so my radio was on in the 5am pacific time hour when I was kinda half awake/half asleep and noticed that the tone of the news announcers voice had become very metered in speech (that's the only way I can describe it) and I just zoned back out and went back to sleep until my mother called me at 6 and demanded I turn on the t.v. and that's when I watched the second jet United 175 hit the second tower on the news.
I couldn't believe my eyes and as I watched it I kept repeating over and over "how are they going to get the jets out of the building". I knew that they weren't going to.
I was 16 and living abroad with my dad's parents. I was actually sleeping when my grandma woke me up and asked me what was going on. She had the TV on and she couldn't understand what the reporters were saying. ( She didn't speak English ).
I FREAKED OUT...My aunt was living in NYC at the time. My family is actually from Boston and a couple of the planes took off from here. I had friends in the city also and I was crazy worried about everyone. I tried calling but could not get through.
I lost a friend who worked at the towers. I was so traumatized I dropped out of school for 6 months. I was really depressed. I would sleep all day and stay up all night.
