So would it be okay for me to ask for a handicapped spot in case my foot starts flaring up too and it would be too excruciating for me to go 3 blocks on foot? I guess I should just get orthopedic shoes instead.
Good point - it is true that MS is unpredictable. I know somebody who had bad migraines and got a temporary handicapped spot during a flareup. I guess I will give people the benefit of the doubt.
Yes, I think it would be OK. For the past year I had knee and back problems that often made walking difficult. On the days when I had to go to the store and I was in pain, I used the handicapped card; if I felt well, I parked in a regular spot.
Happily, I have been successfully treated by a pain management specialist and the pain is gone. The handicapped card has been retired.
That's something I wonder too, I've got a very strong "I'll do it myself" attitude and wonder if it would prevent me from using those spaces even if I qualified, or would I suck it up and walk the extra 40 feet from another space.
Not saying people who qualify for them shouldn't use them, but when I see someone take the closest one to the door then practically trot into the store I often wonder if there isn't a sense of chivalry among those with the tags where you might leave the closest or last one to someone else that might come along that is worse off.
Heart conditions qualify for handicapped hangtag too, it does not have to be about immobility issues. People are vetted by medical doctors, they don't all find their hangtags at the flea market.
"Before criticizing someone, walk a mile in his/her shoes."
I specifically said "not saying people who qualify for them shouldn't use them" didn't I? Anyone who gets a tag certainly has the right to use it.
It's still an interesting question if one person with tag might decide not to take the last spot because someone worse off could come along, and wondering that certainly doesn't make me critical of anyone.
Because I have a sense of pride. I'd feel terrible if I hopped out of my car parked in a handicapped spot and saw someone who actually needed it. I'd be ashamed. Others do not share my sentiments. Unless I'm completely crippled I'm not doing it.
If you "hopped" out of your car, you don't need it.
Pride has absolutely nothing to do with pain. Methinks that if you actually had the excrutiating back pain that some people do, you would be getting a handicap placard stat.
<said by someone who has degenerative disc disease, who's lost 2 1/2+ inches in height over the last 3 years and is in agony with a completely blown out disc blocking 95% of their spinal canal. the same someone who has a handicap placard that is in use on really bad days and has gotten ripped to shreds by the cocoon clan on occasion because I'm relatively young and don't "look" handicapped.>

If there's a semi close spot available, I usually take that instead.
There's always someone thinner, richer and unfortunately, in more pain than I who might need that closer spot just a wee-bit more.
I will use the tag when I am having real trouble walking but if there are other slots available fairly close I will leave the handicapped places open. Some times I see these chirpy young things in running cloths abuse the tag. Then I regret not having wire cutters to apply to tire valves stems.
How about the grocery store with a spot that is reserved for "New and expectant mothers"?
I used to park in it when my kid was a baby. I hate discrimination.
I was JUST going to post this.
I loved the "stork" parking when I was 8-9 months pg ... especially when it was 100+ degrees and I had to pee every 42 seconds. But talk about a spot that's ripe for cheating!
Frankly, I NEVER see anyone abusing Handicapped Parking in my state, the fine is way too high!
What I DO see, practically every day, is perfectly able bodied people parking in the FIRE LANE...talk about pet peeve
This is their way to avoid the Handicapped Parking fine!?!
