People on the city data board love talk about the evils of stereotyping. But the media is always telling us positive things about certain races and cultures that sound very much like a stereotype. Here are some examples:
Asians are hard working and great with math and science.
Asians are committed to Education
Hispanics are very religious
Hispanics are very family orientated
Black men are good dancers
Black Men are great in professional sports.
Jewish People are great at making money
Jewish people are creative
-------
I could go on and on. So, do you think that a positive stereotype is as bad and wrong as a negative stereotype? And if they are so bad why does the politically correct media keep telling us them?

I think stereotypes are basically worthless and do my best to sift through what the media considers worthwhile.
There's a difference between a stereotype and a statistical profile. Stereotyping is saying that all Asians are hardworking math wizards because you know one Asian who is hardworking and mathematically gifted. Statistics showing that Asian perform better than other ethnic groups on math tests may reinforce certain stereotypes, but they are just statistics, just numbers.
Stereotyping is something people do. It's part of human strategy to deal with all the information we get constantly, to shorthand our environment to make it easier to deal with that environment. What's wrong with stereotyping is that we get vested in stereotypes emotionally, and then cannot deal with an individual except by applying the stereotype. You can't get to know someone as a person if you are constantly imposing your preconceived notions on that person.

Well that's different....
Also you can stereotype some groups, just not the protected ones.
Why deal with sterotypes at all? Meet people and take the time to get know them on an INDIVIDUAL BASIS. You might be pleasantly surprised at what you can find out by NOT sticking a label on somebody based on whatever preconceived notion you bring to the table.
How is a stereotype different than a cultural norm (studied in sociology). Or a political norm (like Black people are traditionally Democratic in their voting patterns)????

But EVERY Black America isn't a Demcocat. That is the point. Wouldn't be more prudent to take the time to get to know how a person feels about a political issue than assume based on some statistic?
