Okay, I'm not a Republican or a Democrat (Libertarian), and I think Ms. Maddow had some good points here, but "Maddow gets it right again" makes me think that the post is going to be partisan hackery. This is a worthy discussion, don't undermine it from the start by making it partisan. Republicans do typically campaign better than Democrats. However, I don't think the fact that their healthcare plans and the law recently passed by the Democrats share some commonalities necessarily means they are taking credit for the accomplishments of the Democrats.

They don't need to. The Republicans are doing it for them.

If this bill is such a political loser for the Democratic Party, why have the Republicans fought so hard to defeat it? Their earnestness and ferocity have been admirable. Aside from one little nudge by Maine Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe, not one Republican legislator has been caught "helping" the Democrats to their inevitable destruction.
For the answer, let's return to 1993. Bill Clinton had just been elected, and was trying to move Hillary-care through Congress. Many Republicans, recognizing that the system needed fixing, were thinking about cooperating, and drafting a sound, bipartisan, and moderate bill.

Then Bill Kristol wrote his famous memo, which pretty much set Republican strategy for the next 20 years. Say what you want about Kristol, that was some memo!

"The Clinton proposal is…a serious political threat to the Republican Party," Kristol wrote. "Republicans must therefore…adopt an aggressive and uncompromising counterstrategy designed to delegitimize the proposal and defeat its partisan purpose."

Democratic efforts to reform the private health insurance system, a popular goal in 1993, should be painted as a massive government takeover that will interfere with every patient's relationship with his or her doctor and doom us all to inadequate care, Kristol wrote. For Republicans, the "long-term political effects of a successful Clinton healthcare bill will be even worse--much worse," he said. "It will relegitimize middle-class dependence for 'security' on government spending and regulation. It will revive the reputation of the party that spends and regulates, the Democrats, as the generous protector of middle-class interests. And it will at the same time strike a punishing blow against Republican claims to defend the middle class by restraining government."

And therein, I think, lies the real reason that Republicans have been fighting so hard. It is not that they think this legislation is the political kiss of death; it's that, in their hearts, they're terrified that it will be a rousing success.

So not only did "Maddow get it right" but so did John A. Farrell.

Maddow is an idiot... I can't believe there is that many idiots on here that believe what she says... there is a lot of agreement in SOME of the health care law... but there are also a lot of deal breakers in there as well... you don't say Republicans campaign for the entire the thing when it STINKS... sure everybody is going to like part of it and there is a HUGE part of it that they don't like... probably the government taking over health care part... oh, yeah, there is that "small" part in the health care reform law but lets not talk about the bad parts, lets just talk about the good part and maybe the liberals here would overlook that "small" part... The Republicans are campaigning on bring the good parts and leaving out the bad parts... you got that liberals? You got Maddow... I know it requires some intelligence and actual thinking...

And what is your solution to fixing the fiasco. Name calling is funny and all, but when it comes down to it, there need to be some major fundamental changes to the system. Government run healthcare is going to come to America sooner or later, it's just a matter of which route we take to a universal healthcare system. Trial and error is a wonderful thing, and we have seen that an unregulated free market system doesn't work. Funny how conservatives like to pick and choose what classifies as socialism. Putting your party's political future before the country's future may benefit you in the short run, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time.

There is NOTHING either valid or informative about this thread. You're quoting left wing loons. Rachel Maddow, Eugene Robinson..? Come one..! You would be hard pressed to find two bigger loons. If you listen to trash like this, it explains your mind set.
I feel sorry for someone who gets their information from such sources.. It destroys any creditability you might have had...
