The Salvation Army food shelf here in Plattsburgh NY goes bare on a daily basis. They have trouble with the free lunches they give Mon. - Fri. too. I know this, because I 'work' in the thrift store and speak with the very busy manager/coordinator that stops several times a week. But it's all just exaggerated.
I live on this plant.

I'm not saying there are not needy people, or that there are not areas with very high concentrations of needy people, or that there aren't more needy people now than ever before (that will always be true btw...no matter when you say it). I'm am saying that not everyone who meets the critera for services actually needs them, or are starving, or even considers themselves poor. Plus there is a whole lot of fraud involved with any government handout program. This is what I mean when I say numbers, used to mainly qualify for more government money or appeal to people to donate more money, are exaggarated.

And a good support network is superior to government handouts, but government handouts are easier and who'd going to say no to something free?

The problem comes when those on welfare who are parents and purchase lobster with their food stamps.

Maybe that is why we hear school teachers complaining about kids from poor families being hungry and the govt saying we must offer more meals in school to feed the hungry kids from poor families.

Yup, pitzz away the food stamps for a couple meals of lobster, then let the school feed your hungry kids the rest of the month.

Nothing better for the corporations than dirt cheap labor subsidized by the government - that is the taxpayers.
The corporations are "grateful" for Medicaid too... that way they don't have to pay for-profit corporate premiums anymore. Ironic , corporations may be the first ones that actually run health insurance corporations out of business

The solution would be to give poverty level families more Food Stamps then, and cut out corporate welfare (the real lobster-eaters)

This is a huge problem. I'm all for finding a way to get those on food assistance a greater amount of natural foods. Not sure how to do that though as you as, it's more expensive.

Perhaps though , in the long run we would save money. More than likely, someone eating less prossessed garbage is going to be healthier and less of a burden on our heath care system.

Food stamp fraud may steal $400M from stimulus funds - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

"The program is poised for a historic expansion with the addition of $20 billion in federal stimulus money. About $400 million, or 2 percent, of that will be lost to fraud, according to government estimates".

The point is, there is a lot a fraud in the federal gov't. There should be an ongoing action to ensure the taxpayers money is used for which it was designated.

As one congressman said, Ibelieve, "a million here, a million there, soon we are talking about a lot of money" or something to that affect.

100 to 400 million in food stamp fraud is NOT acceptible.
So the $60B we gave to GM was acceptable? The $118B we gave Bank of America was acceptable? The list goes on and on. No, welfare fraud is not right but if your going to talk about fraud, start at the top and work your way down. $38B was the cost of the last six month unemployment extension. So what we gave BOA could have covered millions of unemployed workers benefits for 18 months. MILLIONS. So did BOA have to beg and plead for the $118B? Hell no. But 2.7 million unemployed people had to wait and worry as Congress played games with their benefits and cut them off. Off topic? No, because all these unemployed people are now on welfare and now they have to deal with people who are so worried they are committing welfare fraud.

If your really want to see some irony - the same hospitals that whine about how many patients are uninsured, are often hiring what they call "prn" or "oncall" employees so they don't have to provide them anything like health insurance benefits or regular pay.

Question-------a school teacher is required by law to report any signs of physical abuse when kids come to school.

Yet, when kids are extremely hungry coming to school, the teachers state we need more govt school meals.

Teachers should be required by law to report kids who always appear hungry if they claim don't get enough to eat at home .

A parent who blows their food stamps on luxury food or cashing out are just as guilty of child abuse as the ones who beat their kids.

Both should have their kids taken away !
