How was the bakery intolerant? They do not want their daughters to learn about the gay lifestyle. There is nothing wrong with that.
I support the right of the bakery to refuse the order, but you really think that filling an order for rainbow cupcakes amounts to teaching people about the "gay lifestyle"? The daughters probably already know more about sex (both gay and straight) than their parents do.
The problem is that people are acting surprised that the customer felt discriminated against.
How would you feel if a place of business refused to make cupcakes for you because they symbolized something like your religion or race, which they inherently disagreed with? How would you feel if they were so intolerant of your race or religion that they couldn't even be professional enough to just put the order in?
I would be upset and I would go to another business.
There are people who do not agree with who you are. That's life. Whining, complaining, and demanding that people accept who you are will get you nowhere.
Would there be the same outcry if a vegetarian restaurant refused service to carnivores asking for a steak?

No there would not be. The thing is the answer was for a f ag promotion party. If the answer would have been, oh, I'm having a party and thought it would be neat to have the various colors, then guess what, the cup cakes would have been made for them. But the answer was another in your face lifestyle statement. Of course the defenders of the ones who didn't get the cupcakes will never look at it that way.

I would do the same. I was just hoping to make a point on this thread to those who seem to treat gays like an exception to all that stuff we learn as kids about having basic respect for other people as human beings.

Were their daughters present? Were their daughters going to be making the cupcakes or watching the parents make them? And even if they were, how are their daughters going to learn the gay lifestyle from a few rainbow cupcakes? Six-year-olds use rainbows as a theme for their birthday. It's not like these people were coming in and showing the owner's daughters tapes of fellatio. Thinking that making a rainbow cupcake or two is going to turn your daughters into lesbians is extremely irrational thinking.

That's a good question. If it was a mom and dad of 4 requesting rainbow cupcakes for their 6-year-old daughter's birthday, would the bakery have refused the request? Or would they have realized that a rainbow is just a rainbow? Even when it is being used to represent the gay community, it's still just a rainbow. Even if it were possible to convert people to homosexuality, I think it would take a little more than a rainbow in your visual field.
