extremely relevant... a 50 percent tax hurts the poor more than the rich, that is not equal. if you want a real "flat tax" it would have to be a flat amount..then it would be equal...flat percentage is not equal...the billionairs stay far wealthier than other workers under our current system...so its fair enough. Its not "equal" by percentage, so if the system is a percentage of percentage that's even better...finding the "right" single percent that would minimize the hurt to all would be a very sucky method, being as living expeses change, and the poor would also again be hurt more. and the more the poor are hurt the more they will rise up against us.

Just watch tuition rates come down..because without students there is NO school.

Buy now, pay later attitude makes people not pay close attention to rising costs.
I agree, the schools are taking advantage of our capitalist system...its time to rise up against them. ...make loans of any kind illegal and all prices go down, and jobs are lost, and wall street jumps out the window, and china takes its rightful historic place as the number 1 civilization.

I guess the first thought should be about the partners on One Nation - UNIONS.

I don't really think this was so much about "Liberal" vs "Conservative" colleges. Who really chooses a college or University based on that????? They were taking about money for Teacher Unions, not conservative vs liberal colleges.

Sure .... college kids are having problems, Universities have lost funding and the college loans (and tuitions) are through the roof. Add to that that, the poor kids that have taken out $100,000+ loans can't find a job. How will they ever pay this money back? For that matter, how will parents keep their kids in these high priced colleges? I guess everyone has noticed that the community colleges have been kicked under the bus.

Were they demanding that the American public pick up the tab for the kids that are attending these $50,000 a year tuitions at "Elite" Universities? I don't know, but I think it's unlikely. That could actually come when you consider the other demands for "Bailout" .... who would have ever thought that the US Taxpayer would be on the hook for the Detroit Auto Industry and the secured bond holders would be kicked to the curb, including pension holders? Perhaps "Elite Universities" are next but they have already made it clear that the public school Teacher Unions are on the table for a Bailout for their inflated Pension funds and annual raises when the rest of the country is begging for jobs.

Much more likely (considering the crowd) that this was all about a bailout for Teacher Unions. The Unions and the NAACP were the driving force of "One Nation".

The real question is ... "One Nation" for who?
For you, if you quit whining and actually participate. Do your research instead of just guessing. if you had gotten involved you would know how much "Unions and NAACP" drove the rally...which they probably did, since they should have the money and power...but i wasn't involved, so i wouldn't know.

what these idiots want is for everyone to get a college education paid for by the taxpayers. the problem is that there still needs to be people who clean toilets, sweep floors, repair the machines, etc. and those jobs dont need a college degree to do.

In europe, in countries like Germany, only the smartest students go to University, and their ability to do so is decided by entering high school, the kind of high school they go to determines whether or not they go to college or vocational school.

And should tax payers be flipping the bill for someone's worthless poli sci, history, or feminist literature degrees?
Wrong! In Russia, vastly more students go to college than in the U.S., Canada and Israel have a higher proportion of college graduates too. I think the U.S is about 6th or 7th on the list, and dropping, which was the basis for Obama's speech about getting Americans back on track where higher education is concerned.

Germany's colleges vary in their admission policies, and have entrance exams on which you have to score progressively higher to make up for a lower GPA. Much like the SAT and related tests used at universities in the U.S. A majority of Germany's public universities are tuition-free.

I'll agree that there a quite a few majors that are, for the most part, pointless. However, if you take a look at funding for education, including higher education, there is a strong correlation between increasing the educational attainment and both economic growth and standard of living. We seen it in this country in the 50s and 60s when the government encouraged education to keep an edge on the situation with the Cold War. The Republic of Ireland made an effort to increase the number of college graduates in the late 80s and 90s, and went from Western Europe's poorest country to one of Western Europe's wealthiest. India and China are in the process of increasing educational levels, and sometime in the near future we will see a few African nations make a name for themselves. Possibly Kenya being among the first.

Well at some point these folks that aren't cut out for college realize it.
Only now they have a loan over their head to repay.

Dropout rates at CC's are near 60% in some cases.
You see..they want everyone to go to college and use a loan to pay.
I don't think they care if they graduate though.
