be that much different from europe's despite all the handguns, etc we have here compared to europe?

I realize there are some murders in rural areas, but you don't have much (other than a mass shooting once in a while, which europe has as well) the things where 30 people get shot in a weekend in places like Chicago..

Take away gang/inner city murders, how different would the US rate be with that of europe?

You do realize that Europe has "inner-cities", gangs and projects too?

Two issues here: whether urban areas have more crime than rural areas, and whether strict gun control laws would lower the crime rate.

To the first one, yes, to the second one, no.

The issue can be confusing, because you can't control for the critical variable: whether the population with a high gun ownership rate is inner-city thugs and gang members, or self-sufficient, law-abiding and productive Americans.

If the first group have a lot of guns (and they will since they could care less about violating laws when rape, robbery and murder are daily fare), you will have a high crime rate. If you take away their guns, they will use knives, baseball bats and other weapons. When you fight for your life on the streets, daily survival using the best weapons will trump possible potential jail time later.

If the second group have a high rate of gun ownership, the crime rate will be low. Decent Americans do not use guns to commit crimes, because they are decent Americans. They will, however, defend their lives and the lives of their family members (and if the government allows them to, even their homes!) if it comes down to that.

To say decent Americans cannot defend themselves because there are criminals who would use a gun inappropriately is insane. If there were no criminals, or if the government had room to keep them in jail after locking up substance offenders en masse, we wouldn't need to defend ourselves.

Take out the inner city gangs, the drug tafficking, and the US murder rate would be very low indeed. Going further...
Calculate European racial demographics and then weigh US murders by those same precents and you would probably find us murders a close parallel to European murder rates. For example (using made up numbers) if Blacks made up 5% of European population but made up 15% of US population you would count the US murders committed by blacks at only 1/3 value. The same for the other races.
You could also do the same statistical 'normalizing' by other factors as well but I suspect the racial one would prove the most accurate in allowing one to compare apples to apples.

Of course if you took away a large portion of violent crime/murders, the rate would go down.

Instead of starting a speculative thread on here, why not figure it out yourself?

So why does Chicago have more murders than, say Frankfurt?

Here's a great resource for comparisons of national statistics to include crime statistics.
