Health officials estimate that 1 in 22 black Americans will be diagnosed with the AIDS virus in their lifetime — more than twice the risk for Hispanics and eight times that of whites.
....or lived in Africa or visited Africa in the last several years, yes.
From what I understand that regulation is about to be overhauled. I was born and raised in Africa, have been in a monogamous relationship for 21 years, but am banned for life from donating in the US based on my country of birth.
That's the thing, the current regulations are not backed by any scientific reasoning, just the fear and panic that ensued in the early 80's. Unsafe sexual practices are just that, and they are engaged in by both genders, and all sexual orientations, and it is the sexual practices that should be determined, and used to reject iffy blood. We are long overdue an overhaul of the system to keep the supply safe, and sufficient.
If this is a public health issue as you say, why are black individuals allowed to donate?
Obviously there is overlap between the black and gay demographics.
The point remaining that a significantly higher relative proportion of gay people are HIV positive as opposed to gay and not HIV positive than any other demographic.
And people born in sub-saharan Africa are not allowed to donate. Who's standing up for their rights?
