[quote=Wicked Felina;16274538]Really? I wonder why not.
Population:
Chile 16+ million
US 310+/- million
Wars in volved in:
Chile none
US God know how many, at minimum one long-a** war in Afghanistan
Borders under siege:
Chile none
US a nearly 4,000 mile long one (d**n those Canadians!)
World economic superpower (at least currently):
Chile Nope
US Yes
So I'm thinking the President of the United States has a few more issues to deal with, other than focusing on a single issue for more than three months. Of course, the Chilean President does as well, but not nearly so much as POTUS.
^^^^
My point, exactly.
I suppose we can discuss/debate the amount of patriotism that is overtly displayed at present in the US.
What sort of nation/neighbor/people would we/any country be if the resources were available to assist at a critical moment and the choice was to refuse?
I believe America is in deep $#*!. And not just economically. IF... you know what I mean.
Yes. I can remember things being less intense for lack of a better term.
'I'm Proud to be an American'--was once acceptable and now it could be considered divisive.
I really don't need to know anyone's political affiliation but if it is important to them and they choose to 'take a stand' I suppose I understand.
I don't recall Bush being present in PA back in 2002 when those trapped miners were rescued. And he shouldn't have been. He was too busy making up stories about Saddam's nonexistent WMDs. He had a war to start, darn it!
Pessimists aren't disappointed as often as optimists.
'Hope and Change'.
Anyway it was a nice moment to watch--human beings sharing a victory rather than grieving a disaster.
IIRC, the president of Chile isn't widely liked. In this instance he followed his instincts and human lives were saved. Reason enough to celebrate and show some enthusiasm. I suppose they could have sung a hymn but the national anthem was also appropriate.

Agreed. The rescue of those miners was a tremendous effort and big success that should be celebrated. And if the president of Chile wants to make some political hay, so be it. Good for him.
But this thread was started in an attempt to try to connect that positive development in Chile with a swipe at opposing political viewpoints in America. Which is psychotic.
We've had mining disasters and rescues here in America. No president of either party has attended. And rightly so. They have bigger fish to fry.
COPIAPO, Chile — Just two of the "los 33" miners remained hospitalized Friday, after 28 were released during the day andas word emerged that the men want to closely guard their story so they can fairly divide the spoils of their media stardom.
That could explain why none of them have spoken publicly at any length or provided any dramatic details of their 69 days trapped a half-mile beneath the Atacama desert.
I thought it was great for their country good for them.
For some reason it is popular for some segments of our society to hate America and love other countries, even if they are into killing their own let alone those in other countries.
As each miner was brought out of the mine the rescuers and the spectators on scene continuously repeated this proudful chant. In addition, there were flags displayed everywhere and speeches were made expounding on the greatness and ingenuity of the Chilean people.
The patriotism was palpable through my LCD screen.
My first thought was that if this had occurred over a mine in, say West Virginia, the lefties would have much voiced much disgust at the naked jingoism displayed by the uncouth, uneducated slack jawed yokels. How foolish they would be to be so proud of this nation.
Opinions?
I'm actually surprised that some right wingers are cheering the rescue of Latin American miners. Don't they view Latin Americans as invaders and enemies?
I like that the President of Chile was immediately involved. I like that he immediately sought help from countries (you go Center Rock Inc in Berlin, Pennsylvania and NASA) that had the technical know-how to help and yes, it reminded me of all of the foreign boats that wanted to help us in the Gulf just sitting there for a long period of time because they weren't invited in by our President to help with the oil spill.

That post was certainly borne out of political deparation

Weren't invited, heck, he refused them and turned them away. Obama is no leader. The Chilean President proved he indeed is a leader of which his people can be proud in the efforts to bring the miners back up to the surface.
Did any of the lefties notice that he didn't place a moritorium on mining in his country while calling for stricter regulations? Obama could take a few lessons in effective leadership and working together instead of sitting on his throne with his his arrogant nose stuck up in the air pretending his feces doesn't stink!
