I don't know...so much of Europe are government jobs these days.

Truck drivers in France are not government employees. The large street protests are made up of all French professions and many students as well. France's 10 of 12 oil refineries have been hit by strikes and fuel rationing and shortages are appearing.
Sarkozy's government (and the UMP party) has lost much popularity recently due to his handling of gypsies and the allegations that Eric Woerth, the Finance Minister, knew of tax breaks to France's richest woman, Betancourt.

That's true--but the idea of cutting back on retirement benefits (what Sarkozy's government calls "reform") is much easier to understand than what countries border on Belgium or Greece.
