Republican New Jersey Governor Chris Christie rejects $3 BILLION for new tunnel project into NYC

I miss Jersey, I really do. I especially miss driving there. Not!

My dad was a Schmidt's beer truck driver back in the 1940s and 1950s and had a route from Camden to Atlantic City. He once told me that if you could drive a truck in Jersey traffic and keep your sanity, you could do anything.

Living as far away from my home state as I do now, I actually feel nostalgic for the drop-dead skepticism and wiseguy attitude of a lot of people there -- characteristics which often camouflage surprising warm-heartedness and generosity.

I also miss diners, summer nights at the shore, and rice pudding.

But not the traffic!

I am a native of Asbury Park. Grew up at 302 3rd ave in the 50's and 60's. Look at that town now. It is shameful. Where is the moneyto reinvgorate that once beautiful town? Why hasn't private $ felt secure enough to revitalize that town? I have been told the crooks started to build something over on 4th ave @ Kingsley, but it stands as a testimonial to the ineptness and corruption of government. I have seen it and it is a testimonial to the sad death of AP.

I left NJ years ago because southern Monmouth county was starting to become what it is today; an over crowded pit of people all trying to edge each other out on the GSP or Rt 35. The only part that makes any sense at all is south of A.C. along the coast to Cape May. The rest of the state is...well you all fill in the blank that works for you.

I do miss Pete & Elda's Pizza...and the old bar at Vic's in Bradley Beach.

Governor Christie didn't reject the project for any reason other than Jersey would get stuck for the cost overruns. We all know the unions would suck that project dry and we would have to foot the bill.

We can't afford the 2 Highway Projects that are costing 3 billion $$ in the Central and Southern part of the state. He should stop those too.

Well, first of all it depends on who does the estimate. If you want a high estimate to make your case, you get people to do estimates who will give you worst-case scenario. If you want lower estimates to make your case, you do the opposite.

The fact of the matter is that it COULD go very high, because estimating for the excavation of tunnel is not a slam-dunk easy science. This is a very deep tunnel--and don't forget, this thing is going underneath a mile-wide river--and no one can be 100% sure at this time what the conditions are in the rock and soil that will be encountered down there. They can do borings and take samples, but they could also be missing problems that they won't know about until they actually dig.

The Governor is doing the right thing. Let's wait for someone else to step and offer to cover the over runs. Yes, the tunnel is needed and yes, costs will most certainly go very high.....especially with the unions sucking the project dry.

as someone from NJ and takes the train every day to NY, this tunnel is badly needed. It's not a matter of IF but WHEN this tunnel gets built. NJ is also drowning in unemployment so instead of helping, Christie lost $400 million in the Race to the Top by thinking he was better than everyone else. He then loses 3 BILLION dollars for this tunnel. All this would have brought jobs and helped the people of NJ. Don't believe the sound bites and headlines. Christie is ruining NJ and it's going to takes years if not decades to fix what he's doing.
