THE government has admitted the need to secure oil supplies is a factor in Australia's continued military involvement in Iraq.

Defence Minister Brendan Nelson said today oil was a factor in Australia's contribution to the unpopular war, as "energy security'' and stability in the Middle East would be crucial to the nation's future.

That seems pretty obvious for all of the countries involved. Wonder why they say "admitted" was there ever a denial?

I think they're trying to say this is the "smoking gun" that links the entire war as a war to take over the Mid East oil suppy...

I am shocked. Just shocked. I don't believe it. I know the United States went there to bring freedom and democracy to those poor Iraqi people. I know because President Bush told us so.

Apparrently the words "continued military involvement" and "behind Iraq stay" are lost on some.

I don't see where it says it's why they went in the first place. Care to point out that passage oh "shocked" one???

I'm pretty sure they went the same reason every other country that sent a patrol unit or two did - they were pressured by the Bush Administration to get onboard. So although they thought it was ridiculous, they still sent a couple squads over so they could get put on the list "of the Willing". Aside from the Brits, that coalition is pretty much a sad joke, as some might say the Bush Presidency has turned out to be.
