There is pretty strong evidence that the Industrial Revolution would not have happened if not for near-anarchial societies in Western Europe. The governments in cities like London were pretty much a hindrance for a long time.
Rhode Island, much of the American West, large areas of South America.....All peaceful, stable "countries" that went without taxation and government.......I could go on but you get the point.
And what were the populations of these countries at the time, and what kind of infrastructure did they have, and how much movement between towns was there? What was the quality of life?
When your country consists of something like 10 people per square mile or fewer, and you don't have roads or education, and people's lives are mostly either farming or bartering, or living as a serf, I could imagine life without a need for taxes. It's also likely (but I'm not certain) that some places, especially Ireland, would have had the equivalent of taxation via mandatory tithing to the Church.
Unless you live in a plastic bubble growing your own food producing your own power, disposing of your own waste and you never leave, complaining about taxes just makes you another greedy person who expects to take advantage of services without having to pay.
The 47% who pay no federal income tax do indeed expect to take advantage of services without having to pay.
There are about a dozen countries in the world that do not have a tax on income, many of them are developed.
What kind of taxes do they have?
I'm not taking the position that income taxes are an absolute requirement of a modern society, but some form of people pitching in monetarily (taxes).
