Cogburn was a US Marshall, Cambell was the Ranger and both ended up after the same outlaw.

We're gonna get in trub-ble.

Juan Williams... stupid to fire him, should have just let him quit.

Juan's on fire here - a MUST watch, especially his examples of what you CAN say if you're an NPR employee and still keep your job.

Evidently, not in this climate -- not if he holds an opinion or thought or feeling that is not approved of.

I could (somewhat) understand if he'd stated it on NPR (but even that is a stretch). But he said what he felt on an entirely different station! What jurisdiction does NPR have over a person's words when he is physically away from their turf?

I can understand the NPR stance of holding their correspondents to the highest levels of integrity whenever speaking in the public forum, whatever the venue. In this case, it's clear they were just looking for the opportunity to get rid of Williams.

NPR loses all credibility by firing Juan for his statements, yet taking no action against Totenberg, who made a far worse statement, while speaking directly on NPR.

Huge, huge blunder by NPR.

It's not a free speech issue. I'm perfectly free to go around at work telling everyone what an idiot the boss is, but there's no "free speech" protection against the consequences.

Ask Imus or Limbaugh - any employee can be disciplined for anything unless they have some kind of specific contractual protection. Even then, it's a legal issue, not a free speech issue.
