I've said the same thing a few times. Most aren't qualfied to do anything else. One I know has an engineering undergrad degree, but most of them have degrees in biology or chemistry which w/o further study will get you a job at a day care center. My DD has a degree in biology and is a pre-school teacher.
Are there plenty of nurses to take over the other medical specialities? Nice attempt to put this one off but I still wonder if there is a way to even take sure of the 30 million new people with the number of MDs we have now.
Boo hoo. Doctors leave medical practices all the time. And some other doctors are asked to leave the profession/practice by their peers. They have been doing so for a long time-way before Obama was on the radar.
You know why they leave? Because they DO NOT LIKE their jobs. That's all.
Nobody is indispensable in this world. OK? Doctors will be replaced with doctors who actually enjoy their work.
Well that is a short sighted view. With 30 million more insured we new more doctors not fewer. Also the what doctors will replace these doctors? Are we building many new medical schools?
Not a moment too soon if they're all as unmotivated as this guy. See the last post in the OP's linked thread for a sensible answer to all "doctors" who'd rather trade stocks and flip foreclosures than do something unrewarding like help sick people.
I am sure that those who went to school all that time are crazy to have some bureaucrat tell them who they can treat, how they can treat them, and how much they can charge them. You know very well what the real problem is but won't really look at it. This socialized crap is just the beginning and it will get worse before it gets better.
"three years is what our lawyers are telling us"? If he'd read even the first page of the Health Care Reform Act he would know for himself it's three years.
So he didn't read the document, yet he's ready to chuck his practice based on what he's told is in it.
Okay. He must be a superb, gifted doctor!
It's a 2000+ page law that has many different provisions written in legalese with differing dates of implementation.
I would sooner trust paid professionals working on MY behalf to disseminate what's in the bill and how it would affect my practice than any BS coming out of the White House.

Nope. Matter of fact the feds have been paying medical schools not to take new students for years.
For example: State U. has the ability to accept and educate 50 new medical students a year. They accept 20. The feds pay them the difference for the other 30 that State U. turned away. This keeps the supply of doctors artificially low and increases prices.
And the Universities love it because they get paid the same amount and they don't have extra people to bother with.
If the feds stopped this interference into the market place prices would drop significantly.
Apparently many out there don't personally know, or have relations who are, practicing doctors. Alternate employers or businesses include: The legal industry, insurance, consulting, medical journalism and writing, education (vocational, colleges, seminars), public speaking, health research, pharmaceuticals, health care administration, investing, running medical laboratories, starting businesses that cater to the health care industry, drug treatment, government oversight, off the top of my head.
The American system has done a great job restricting the supply of doctors, in order to keep their incomes high. This will be disasterous for us after Obamacare hits.
The 4 doctors I know personally will also be retiring in 2 or 3 years. They've been practicing for decades and saved for when their high investments and extensive workhours did not give them a decent return after taxes.
Very true. My cousin is a general practitioner but he's getting out of direct patient care altogether as well. He's already transitioning into medical practice investing and consulting and teaches on the side as well.

The reality is the best, brightest, and most well rounded will leave because they can. The quality of remaining physicians will be lower as well as new physicians.
