Like I have said before, I am white, my wife is mexican american we are an educated, well dressed and well spoken couple living in Newport Beach for the last 10 months. Here are some things I have seen first hand in this small amount of time.

Wives Car crash
My Wife who holds 2 B.S. Degrees, makes 6 figures and drives a brand new car. She gets into an accident on PCH and Bayside in Newport. The lady runs to my wives window and starts yelling racist remarks and then, she asks if she speaks english and has insurance?

The bar at the Irvine Crown Plaza:
An older white guy at the bar sits down and turns to me and my friend then says "you guys will like this bartender, he is the smartest mexican, and there are a lot of dumb mexicans in OC". He said this right in front of him too...I just told him my wife is mexican and probably makes more than you.

Mortons in Costa Mesa:
Nice Steak house, expensive dinner, my wife and I are dressed nicely. We get sat down start ordering (My wife speaks perfect english, born in the US, no accent).

The party at the next table starts speaking very loudly, and the White guy and the wives are laughing while saying: "Damn they let wetb***s in here now?" "hahaha", "see this is what is wrong with this country". So I turn to him and ask him who he is directing this talk to? He says "oh nobody, haha"

Summary:
We never have felt this type of direct humiliation anywhere we have lived, in Florida, New York, San Francisco or even San Diego.

This is OC's racism, today. It is not just a status or class thing.

woah....you last example at Mortons in Costa Mesa....that really got me. You handled it much better than I would have. I'm hispanic and if I would have heard that there would be a serious problem which would have to be taken outside. Man, I am so ticked off just READING about it.

Yeah, OC is a very racist county. It may not be everywhere and visible but it is there, especially in the beach communities and southern OC.

Something I encountered once. My fiance (white) and I were at Newport Beach and we were unloading the cooler from the back of my truck. These white teens were walking by, they looked like residents, and I could hear some comments about the probable contents of my cooler. "He probably has a bunch of coronas and tacos" hee hee hee. "Wonder where his 20 kids are?"

Luckily I was too busy trying to unload the truck to get into it. I only half heard them but it was my fiance who heard them and she was pretty upset.
She's from a small town in Louisiana so she's not used to these kind of people.

I just shrugged it off and said "Welcome to Orange County"

Yeah this is what she does too, I am not from Orange County, I have many hispanic friends and I just can't believe this is part of the culture here and is accepted. OC is worse than Georgia IMO. There aren't even any black people here.

Thank god not all white people are this way, it is so sad and embarrassing to be a white person here.

Now I understand why Rage Against the Machine said "I am rolling down rodeo with a shotgun, these people ain't seen a brown skin man since their grandparents bought one."

Well I am not threatening folks, but this is a ****ed up area lol.

We are leaving in less than 2 months.

First of all. Why did you move to Orange County?

I'm white and I despise that place. We had a home on Newport Beach and I hated it. As you see, the people there aren't exactly smart.

They think they're somebody, but they're mostly d-list trashy wannabes at best who think they're so rich and hot, but in reality they're mostly common plebes to the truly wealthy like the ones who live Greenwich, New York or parts of L.A.. I'm glad we made the move to Beverly Hills.

I come from money , good looking and live the "dream life", but I've never in my life talked down or looked down on someone with less than me. I suppose I'm just the product of good education and wonderful parents.

If you feel uncomfortable, I'd suggest moving elsewhere. If you decide to move, I would suggest places like Malibu, Hollywood Hills, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades and Beverly Hills. Here, we have many truly wealthy individuals who could purchase all the pompous paupers of Newport Beach with their spare change who are white, black, latin, etc. and the ones I know never feel uncomfortable here.

Good luck with Newport!

We moved here from Manhattan, NY for a position in Irvine at a major Software Company. I basically took this position for the money and the weather.

We are out of OC, never coming back. Unfortunately, I really like my job and will miss it there, but I can get a much better salary up in the Silicon Valley.

My wife actually warned me of OC, but I was regrettably optimistic. Well now I know.

Interesting post... you claim you have never talked down or looked down on someone with less than you..... then you boast " Here, we have many truly wealthy individuals who could purchase all the pompous paupers of Newport Beach...." I especially like the opening line with the comment about "As you see, the people there aren't exactly smart" Haaaaaaaaa

Apparently, since you "come from money"..you fit in better in Beverly Hills. And so proud of where you live you picked a name that shows it off.

It must be okay to call Newport residents "pompous paupers" if you live in Beverly Hills.

Racism is not county specific, to get back to the original topic. You will find it in every county or state or county. Different races have different issues. You could have just as easily heard those comments in any county.

Good luck in the silicon valley.

We have only lived here 10 months and already these things have occured here, and overall the comments, looks and snarls have added up quickly.

However, it is interesting that I have never felt racism in the Bay Area, North LA, or even San Diego and we spend large amounts of time there.

Admit it OC is full of some really biased, generalist, white people who don't hang out with anyone but white people and the think all Mexicans should be serving them food or doing their lawn. Look around man.

I've heard alot of racism in the OC, but I'm Asian Indian and my husband is white and we haven't been treated badly once.
I've lived in 5 countries and actually found it really welcoming here. When walking down the streets everyone smiles and says hi and I find the people at the restaurants really nice.
Am I just lucky? I've met several hispanic people here and they haven't experienced any form of racism either.
I'm sad to hear about your experiences some of you have had, I guess I've just been fortunate so far.
I live in Newport Beach btw.

Here's an example of reverse racism, not in OC but so what? It happens everywhere to everybody.

I've served my country in war, in asia. While buying lunch the other day in a Vietnamese restaurant (I have a Vietnamese g/f) a big family of asians sitting at a table changed their demeanor and started talking amongst themselves, laughing loudly and stealing glances at me. They were secretly bad mouthing me. Unfortunately for them, I understood every swear word aimed in my direction. Very nice looking family.

When I got my lunch, rather than leaving I sat down on a bench and waited, I'm unsure what I waited for but I never heard any more swear words aimed in my direction.

It happens to all of us and sometimes it comes from those you would least expect.

Technically, that's an example of "racism." "Reverse racism" implies that only members of a majority group can be racist. Unfortunately, many minority group members are racist as well.

If I had been in that situation, I probably would have smiled and said "Have nice day" to them in Vietnamese. Sometimes, it's better to confront ignorance instead of fleeing from it.
