Generations ago, if you got to the point where you were managing 10 supervisors who each manage 15 professionals each (say, to keep a utility plant running), you went home early most days, and got to take all the vacation you earned. You had a nice pension to count on. Life was great.

Nowadays, if you are that person, you work more hours than any of the people below you, every week, and don't get a penny paid in overtime (and the union guys will make sure there's a crisis every Thanksgiving and Christmas and holiday, since they're mad at having to work, despite that they're getting paid DOUBLE TIME). You only get to take one 2-week vacation a year (and you are on the phone solving work problems for most of it), and forfeit the rest. Meetings at corporate headquarters 1200 miles away are set for Saturday night and Sunday morning, so you can travel on your own time and miss none of the 80-hour work week at the plant. You get no pension because it was legally liquidated long after you were vested.

As you go higher up in the company, you pay a larger percentage of your health benefits for every additional $10,000 you make (except the CEO and his army of VPs, who do nothing but rob the company of hundreds of millions a year). The company makes you pay if your cholesterol or blood pressure or Body Mass index is not optimal, though the work stress and hours make meeting these standards impossible.

There's a huge difference between being a professional in your peak earning years, and being "rich." But government is not going to recognize that, since a fortune in tax can be obtained by maxing out taxes on the over-worked working class.

I'm assuming you think that liberals think that the rich don't deserve their money because they actually want them to pay taxes like the rest of us do. Do you also think that people deserve well-paved roads? And schools? And rudimentary government services? The top 6% make 1/3 of ALL of the national income. Them not paying taxes is equivalent to a third of the rest of the population not paying taxes. Do you realize how much lost tax money that is? smh

Why do you care about this but you don't care about half of the US population who don't pay any income tax at all?

Source?

EDIT: There's a difference between people who will be homeless if they have to pay federal taxes and people who evade taxes because they're greedy.

Rather than worry about that 6% why not worry about the 47% below you that pay no Federal Income tax. Some even get back more than was taken out via credits.

That indicates nearly 50% of this country are pretty poor.
Address the poverty. Keep looking to the top to pay more and that bottom portion will grow and grow.

Have you ever wondered from a statistical point how half of the country doesn't pay taxes, and yet even without tax increases, tax revenues remain constant?

It's just fewer people at the very (not anyone you know) top getting bigger slices of the economic pie, and the "middle" class fighting for what's left. Funny watching "Joe the Plumber" type characters fight against their own interests.

And why is that? Mortgage deductions, property tax deductions, child tax credit's, deductions per dependent Do you want to start taking these things away?? Do you know what that would do to middle class families, even those who do pay federal income taxes?
