America is too big for trains. Leave that for countries like Japan or Europe. In America, airplanes will always be the preferred mode of transportation.
Get "big government" out of the road business, and see how fast we get privatized passenger train service again.
Aussieland started that back in the 80s , most of there Urban Highways are Private , All Japanese Highways are Private , some Canadain highways are aswell. If they can do it so can we , there is a catch. There all Toll Roads , but unless you want the Gas tax to keep going up , i think its time we privatize all highways.

Thats a silly argument , so why does Russia have Trains?
i'd love to see high speed rail or any rail, for that matter, here in southwest florida. amtrak runs along the east coast of florida but not down the west coast. i'd love to see some sort of commuter rail linking tampa/st. pete - sarasota/brandenton - ft. myers/cape coral/naples - miami. i do believe that air travel makes sense for cross country jaunts, but regional travel would be better served with high speed rail.
The biggest obstacle to the US getting and enjoying a state-of-the-art high speed rail system has been the US Congress, and especially the Democrats and their environmental fanatics.

In Ohio, the Republican candidate for governor, if he wins, has vowed to either give back the $400 million in federal money we were given to start a passenger rail line from Cleveland to Cincinnati, or try to re-appropriate the money for highway and freight rail improvements.

I suppose if you are concerned about high speed rail between sheep farm to sheep farm you might have a point. But for folks who live in the Northeast corridor, Florida, California, or Pennsylvania, high speed rail makes infinite sense.
I do so wish that people will someday look at the world outside of their own little parochial boxes.
Are tracks are wider in North America , everything is different then Europe and Asia. China does copy us , the only light trains in China are the HSR ones. Everything else is heavy. Thats not why the Acela lose an Hr , my god where do you get this stuff form...

In the Northeast Corridor, with about 45 million people, Amtrak's daily ridership is 28,500. If its trains shut down tomorrow, no one except the affected passengers would notice
