Abortions are considerably complicated and expensive.

There are options the make abortion irrelevant. Birth control, and the morning after pill.

Make those free, without prescription, and there would be no need for abortion, except in extreme cases. (rape, incest, birth defects)

No pregnancy, no need for an abortion.

Cheap birth control, or tens of thousands for prenatal, birth and afterbirth expenses? And/or the additional potential tax payer expenses for WIC, foodstamps, education....

Wow, what a hard decision to make. You'd think insurance companies would be all for it. This is what is called "thinking ahead," people.

The idea against free birth control and/or morning after pills is that people shouldn't have sex until they are ready to have children. This is a silly premise for an argument. We are genetically hard wired to want to have sex, its natural, and its going to happen regardless of what stupid laws are on the books.

So being realistic, lets just allow free birth control for any woman who wants it.
Slight addition----free birth control for any woman OR MAN who wants it. Great post, by the way.

Is birth control preventative care ? If so then it should be free..right ?

Problem here is that they passed the bill but didn't define the conditions so now they are debating it. I do like how Mikulski says "clear intent". If it was clear then why didn't it say so in the bill ? Nothing like some gray wording so that you can go back later and argue points.

This could get pretty costly pretty quick....

Free Birth Control May Be On Horizon - Arklatex Politics News Story - KTBS Shreveport (http://www.ktbs.com/politics/25582774/detail.html - broken link)
"A panel of experts advising the government meets in November to begin considering what kind of preventive care for women should be covered at no cost to the patient, as required under President Barack Obama's overhaul.

Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., author of the women's health amendment, says the clear intent was to include family planning."
That is despicable. I heard, from very reliable sources, that all Airlines are going to provide free flights, to anybody that wants to go somewhere.

I've no issue with free birth control.

Free birth control=less abortions, and less unwanted children.

Folks..this is not free birth control for all.
This is under the free preventative health care for those with insurance.

Does medicaid provide free birth control ?

Birth control is cheaper than abortions. And cheaper than pregnant teens visiting the emergency room.

And it is certainly cheaper than someone who would otherwise go on to be a taxpayer ending up a single mom on welfare.

If government was run as a business, it would be a "no-brainer" investment.

You can get free birth control at the health department. My sister does it all the time. Her wages are below, well whatever level, so she pays nothing for her medical care, and gets free birth control.

I guess botox would be covered, given that pregnancy isn't a medical problem, botox delays/prevents wrinkling, so why not cover this too?

That's funny, so why have unintended pregnancies and abortion rates gone up since the introduction of birth control?
