My kids did drive in cars with people who talked on cell phones, before the laws were passed. And at least one of them also drove while talking on a cell phone, before the laws were passed. So I'm not feeling the big fear. We don't do it now of course, unless nobody is looking.

the other night, I saw a woman driving her van full of kids, probably home from some game, and she was on a cell phone, and could hardly turn the corner while talking on the cell....sheeesh, I swear they should arrest these people. And putting a child's life in danger like that?

I'll assume you mean talks on their cell phone while driving, not talks on they are cell phone while driving. It is very dangerous to talk on a cell phone while driving. My daughter and I will not answer a call until we can find a place to pull out of traffic. My husband, on the other hand, is an accident looking for a place to happen.

What stats are these? I know there have been studies done with cell phones but have never seen any compared with talking to people while in the car. I find that it is actually more distracting for me to talk to someone sitting next to me, than it is to talk on a cell phone, because one has a natural tendency to want to look at a person when talking to them, and controlling that urge can be a bit distracting to be honest.

Neither do the drivers of other cars who may collide with the cell phone talker, or bikers or pedestrians who may be in her path. Etc. Yet the OP is concerned only with the poor children in the car.

I agree that talking on a cell phone is just one of many driving distractions. People who drive recklessly while talking on the phone will likely be reckless drivers anyway...whether or not its due to the cell phone, or playing with the radio, yelling at kids, etc. If one can't practice safe driving whilst on the phone, one should not do it. Personally, I regularly drive 2 hr. stretches on weekends and tend to space out and go into autopilot if I don't find some means of keeping alert. I feel alot safer when I'm chatting on the phone while driving than when I suddenly realize I've driven 30 miles in a daze.

"A new study from University of Utah psychologists found a small group of people with an extraordinary ability to multitask. Unlike 97.5 percent of those studied, they can safely drive while chatting on a cell phone."

How often do you see a driver with a cigarette in one hand and the cell phone in the other hand while they have their wrists on the steering wheel?

Many people who talk on cell phones while driving seem to stare straight ahead with no awareness of what is going on around them as they drive slower than the surrounding traffic.

Proof? While focused driving with no distractions is best, I'd rather see a car with a single driver on a cell phone, than a soccer mom with a car load of kids distracting her (OK or soccer dad, allright?). It would be interesting to see a study showing where the danger is with a cell-dialing, certainly, but carrying a conversation on with one is no different than talking to a passanger. In the interest of safety should we mandate driver-only (no passenger) vehicle operation?

It's like it's an obsession, they can't live without they're cell phones??????
They should have it surgically implanted in they're ears...

Crazy, absolutely crazy? Do they really think they are that important?
So much so, that they are endangering lives....
I swear to God, all the almost accidents I've seen...just last night I was following a woman home up a four lane highway, she was in the fast lane, driving very slow....finally she moved over and guess what, she was talking on a cell....I swear, if someone hits me due to talking on a cell, I'm going to sue the pants off of them...period...

I don't understand insurance companies....if your in an accident, without a seat belt on, they won't cover damages, but hey, talk on a cell??????

No, I would never ever allow my child to ride in any car if I knew the driver didn't pull over before talking on a cell phone...period.

I can't vote.

You need a third option, hands free.

I didn't say I wasn't concerned with Pedestrians, bikers or otherwise??????
But children, do not have a choice, they go with whomever they are told to drive with...period....I'm not isolating this topic to children....
I swear....nope, I'm going to zip it....
