I am soooo tired of these ridiculous "Why do Black people..." threads.
It's never "Why do Latinos..." "Why do Asians...", no, it's the obsession with "Blackness"
Here is the simple answer to the OP's question/comment/issue/concern...
Children will excel at what their parents give them access to, have a knowledge of or set their children's focus upon.
In general, Black children have access to a basketball court, a tag football or a peewee league, and little league baseball.
If more Black children had access (and the financial means to partake in) to a tennis court, a swimming pool for diving, water polo and competition swimming, boats for crew (rowing), the coaching and equipment for lacrosse, sailboats for sailing, ice rink for hockey and figure skating, horses for polo and competitive equestrian sporting etc, etc....then you would have more Blacks in those sports.
No to mention that there is more money to be made in basketball and football than lacrosse or water polo.
I don't think that it is that simple. If blacks had more access to swimming pools they still wouldn't take over the olympic team. I think it has more to do with role models. Blacks see lebron James 7 terrel owens as the type of guy they want to be.
It is true. If you look at college basketball, the best players go straight to the NBA after just one year (if they go to college at all). Almost all of those players are black. This ia a segway leading to the fact that we saw two primarily white teams playing in the NCAA finals last year. I felt like I had travelled back to 1947.

Also, why is it always a comparison with White vs Black and not any other race. How come no one ever considers whether asians can jump or latinos? Ah! those poor Native Americans never get compared to them.
I think it has everyhting to do with putting whity in his place after the treatment of Blacks - but once again this focus only seems to be about Americas past problem with slavery and it mistreatment of certain people.
Its like everytime some Black person betters a white person its as if the white race now has to prove itself to be superior becuase it was shown-up by the 'less superior race.' People who constantly make such comparisons only perpetuate such racist thinking by focusing on the issue as if it were a competition/struggle between the White race and the Balck race.
I am still waiting for the first sub-10 100m Asian sprinter

Lebron James has only been around for a minute.
Logic would dictate that one looks a little deeper.
Children play the games that they have access to in their everyday lives. Its that simple.
ETA: If Asians pushed athelics over academics with their children then you would see a greater number of Asians in professional sports. In my understanding, Asians, tend to view athletics as a long shot to success(which it is) versus becoming educated in a lucrative profession (the more sure bet).

The question is the nature of the sport itself. A pro basketball, baseball or football player can easily make at least $5 million dollars a year strictly from on the field performance. That does not include shoe contracts and other endorsements. With swimming the economics of how an athlete gets paid is almost totally endorsement driven. Also there are not many elite swimmers that are seriously competitive in their late 20's. If you take care of your body, don't get seriously injured and have above average talent you can play pro basketball, baseball or football into at least your early 30's. I just think other sports offer more financial incentives than swimming.
I was at a local gathering place yesterday watching sports news with my white amigo buddies, the fellas.....when I casually brought up the keen observation that almost all the professional and college sports teams are now almost entirely African Americans...
Do you watch hockey or baseball? Ever? Even once time?
whos fault is that MLB set up shop outside of america..and bring in imported players some who are black but not american black of course
There are two things going on here. First up until the 1970's baseball was still pretty popular with many young Black American kids. The popularity of football on television in the 1970's started getting more young Black American kids playing the sport. Then came Michael Jordan and that just sent the popularity of basketball through the roof. I also think the rise of single parent households also played a role in the decline of the popularity of baseball among Black American kids. Usually the first person to expose you to baseball is your dad.
On the other hand baseball is just part of the culture in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Mexico just like basketball is among many young Black Americans. The biggest sports idols in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republican are by far baseball players. Kids in those countries play baseball in the street or an field like young Black American kids play football and basketball in their neighborhoods. It's just part of the culture.
i do not see athletes color when I watch sports. They're either good or average.
Except for hockey.
I's weird seeing a black hockey player.
Oh. and Ivy League basketball.
The top golfer, tennis players are already black. There's black Olympic swimmers and skaters and even a gold medalist in fencing IIRC.
It's only a matter of time.
