This is just a question to ponder- especially to those who favour "less government". A cruise ship has a fire in an engine room in international waters 80 miles off the Mexican coast. The fire is out and the passengers are in no immediate danger but the engines don't work and the ship needs to be towed into port. So we have a ship that is FLAGGED with a FOREIGN flag (Panama), that is in INTERNATIONAL waters off the coast of MEXICO. So why is the USA responding to what should be handled by Panama or Mexico?? Keep in mind that Carnival Cruise Lines pays not a CENT in taxes to the United States. None, zero, zip. And they choose not to cruise under the flag of the United States. Yes there are Americans on board along with hundreds of Mexicans, Canadians and other nationals but they are in NO danger. So why are WE towing this ship to a port in MEXICO??
Carnival and Royal Caribbean take advantage of maritime laws to avoid paying U.S. taxes, gain immunity from American labor laws, avoid U.S. courts in workplace disputes and fend off new environmental regulations, government records and industry reports show.
They have done that by incorporating in Central America and Africa and registering their ships under the flags of foreign nations -- giving tiny tropical countries regulatory power over one of Florida's major industries.
The Mexican Riviera-bound ship, which was drifting about 55 miles off the northern Baja California coast, was in contact with the U.S. Coast Guard, which deployed aircraft and ships along with the U.S. Navy and Mexican Navy.
That I agree with. We should help, after all we have Americans on that ship.
I guess if you don't think rescuing Americans on foreign facilities and/or countries, then I guess we shouldn't have helped the Iranian hostages, or any POW's after the war was over, etc.
But I've also said that the United States should start charging for any military excursions for other countries, even when they help our own citizens.
One question, is the ship an American ship, or is it registered to another country? I honestly don't know. If its an American ship, then it is essentially American soil.
it never ceases to amaze me that people on both sides will complain when the US engages in a humanitarian operation. we have done similar things around the world for decades because it is the right thing to do.
