Yeah, wow, $3.8T by 2020 is almost enough to offset the new deficit spending initiatives that might well be passed in the next 2 weeks!

Really puts the fed's spending into perspective, doesn't it?

I disagree with your post.

I think most all Americans are willing to sacrifice once they see that the government has done its part to reduce the size of government and eliminate waste.

Really, why should the U.S. citizens scarifice when the government continues to grow.....the pay rate of government employess continues to rise......Obama spends 2 billion on a trip to India......Obama has $100 a pound Wagu beef dinners.......Nancy Pelosi jets around in her own plane at taxpayers expense......15,000 IRS employess are about to be added as part of Obamacare......etc, etc, etc.

Again, U.S. citizens are willing to scarifice but it must start at the top and the sacrifice should be equal among all.

Certainly silly for individuals to sacrifice when government continues to waste.

Which new bill will increase spending by 4 trillion?

The problem with using war hero figures as associations with national sacrifice is that in this case it doesn't exactly relate to the reality on the ground.

Americans have watched government waste for years and even decades and haven't raised an eyebrow other than to complain about it to their bowling buddies. As long as life was manageable, as long as Bob the carpenter and Jack the mechanic could provide for their families, have that 3/2 in the burbs, and enough time of their own to golf and watch football, they willing laid over the barrel and said, ok.

The last time Americans willingly and collectively sacrificed was during WWII, when folks recycled everything, accepted food rations, etc... If you look around at these forums and pay close attention to the posting of people from every side, it is quite clear that "there will be no compromise" and that no one is going to willing give up anything that would reduce their lifestyle more than it already has.

The floggings will continue until morale improves.

10-year projections:
Extension of Bush tax cuts for middle class - $2.2T
AMT relief - $700B (although they only pass one year at a time to keep it out of CBO deficit projections)
doc fix - $210B
Estate tax relief - $TBD
Unemployment extension/expansion - $TBD

All on the table for lame duck session. $3.1T of known cost, and lots more that hasn't been scored yet...

This plan will be DOA because politicians will not be willing to make tough choices.

The cuts aren't going to be extended for 10 years, and neither is AMT.

So much for that argument.

Exactly. But again, why should anyone give up anything or make individual sacrifices when the government continues to waste and expand? Until the government takes a razor to itself, why should citizens sacrifice?

It would kind of be like a married couple trying to get out of debt.....the wife paying off the MasterCard every month, only for the husband to go out and charge more on the same MasterCard. That isn't paying off debt, but simply putting a burden on the wife while the husband plays. Lately it looks like U.S. citizens are the wife, with the burden of debt, while the government is the husband, free to spend and play.

Huh - how do you figure that? Obama wants the cuts made permanent!

There's been an AMT patch every year - what makes you think they will stop now?

Nobody has even suggested NOT doing those thing.
