We always knew that there were people in positions of wealth and power who wanted to see Social Security killed dead in its tracks. I never believed We the People would let it happen until I saw President Obama appoint the Cat Food Commission and put Peter Peterson, a known SS hater, at its helm. That's when I knew the end of SS would---not could---WOULD become extinct.

Laugh all you want at such an absurd idea---libs laughed at the notion that Repubs could get back into power a mere four years after Republicans demolished this country during 2000-2006. And when Obama set up the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform I realized then and there that he'd been given orders by the higher-ups to squash SS and will dutifully comply.

If we've learned anything over the last 30 years it's that the rich/elite eventually get what they want. And right now they want to kill SS dead. So I've already accepted the fact that SS is a goner. My question is just how exactly will its demise play out?

* will the checks just stop coming one day soon in the near future?
* will they continue payments for the retired but target the crowd 55 and younger for gradual phaseout?
* will they just stop COLA's and let those 62+ gradually die off while they continue to collect the revenues from young workers and then invest them in the stock market under the guise of "private retirement accounts"
* will it be a fast death (2012) or a slow and painful one (2015-2025)

Anyone have any thoughts on how SS's certain demise will play out?

First they will take everyone's 401k's and pensions. Roll that into SS, then get rid of SS and keep all the money. That's how it will play out.

The sooner the better. If you can't take care of yourself you go on welfare. Just quit taking 8 percent of my paycheck. I can do better investing it myself.

Default Just stop and look at the facts, please...

If there were NO changes in social security taxes or benefits, decades from now there would be enough money to cover about 80% of scheduled benefits.

What does this mean? Two things:

1. SS is NOT going away.

2. Relatively modest adjustments are needed.

I've felt for a long time that SS retirement age should be indexed to life expectancy. The notion that you could have one out of three adults sitting in a rocking chair is ridiculous on the face of it--you can't run a society on that basis.

Social security isn't dead, its to popular of a program.

Retirement age will increase, means testing will be instituted for higher earners, and COL raises will continue to be stopped for a while, but its not going anywhere. Hell, 70% of Tea Party members support social security in its current form.

Well, that's good news. I only hope you're right. I and millions of others are only two years away from benefits.

Yep, and I'm resigned to my fate that I'm going to have to work an extra 10 years of my life to pay for your butt!

Thats ok though, y'all worked hard to make my life expectancy longer.

If they take away SS, many people would be added to other government programs to survive. For many people SS is their only income and they are living below the poverty line today.

If they take away the COLA's these same people will suffer because their rent, food, expenses, etc. will continue to rise. The homeless population and people in nursing homes will explode.

Maybe the Feds should take SS out of the budget so they can't put their grimey hands on it. I think the Johnson Adm. took it out of the Treasury Budget and put it in the Federal budget, where the crooks in DC continue to dip into it.

Is Congress going to stop getting COLAs? Are they reducing their office expenses? I wish they would stop mailing the junk to me that goes directly in recycle. Think of the $$ they could save in each office!
